Woman suffers eyelid necrosis from hydrogen peroxide injection for teeth whitening

On October 23, Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Ngoc Lam, Director of the Center for Craniofacial Surgery and Plastic Surgery, 108 Central Military Hospital, said that this was the first time the hospital received and treated a case of complications due to hydrogen peroxide injection used in dentistry to remove dark circles under the eyes.

The patient, Ms. H. (68 years old, residing in Ha Giang province), had undergone filler injection to rejuvenate her eyes and remove dark circles under her eyes at home after being recommended by an acquaintance.

After the procedure, the injection area became hard and the skin around the eyes became dark. For nearly a month, the spa staff continuously injected the patient into the tear trough area despite complications.

However, when the condition worsened, the patient went to the 108 Military Central Hospital for examination with red, swollen, painful lower eyelids and reduced vision.

After examination, the doctor determined that the patient had tissue inflammation, the entire lower eyelid skin was swollen, hard, red, painful, necrosis began to form, and vision was reduced.

More surprisingly, the doctors discovered that the tube of eye-darkening medication given to the patient was actually a tube of hydrogen peroxide gel, used to whiten tooth enamel in dentistry.

Ms. H. had surgery to drain the pus, clean the necrotic tissue, and receive local care. Then, she needed to cut, clean the damaged tissue, and stimulate wound healing.

Currently, the patient's wound is gradually stabilizing, vision is improving, but in the long term it may leave scars that cause eyelid deformation and risk of necrosis.
