Three children were born healthy, the first boy weighed 2 kg, the second girl weighed 2.1 kg, the third girl weighed 1.9 kg.
Doctors in the surgical team said that among the 3 fetuses, 1 baby boy had 2 different eggs, 1 placenta, 1 amniotic sac, and the remaining 2 baby girls had 2 amniotic sacs, sharing the same egg and placenta.
This is the mother's first pregnancy. Ms. T. got pregnant naturally and her health was stable during pregnancy. The doctors prescribed a cervical cerclage at the appropriate gestational week to maintain the pregnancy and advised her to get an injection to mature the fetus' lungs.
Doctor Hoang Thi Chung, Head of Obstetrics Department 1, Phu Tho Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said this is an extremely rare triplet birth because the mother naturally carried 3 babies, 1 from a different egg, 2 from the same egg.
"The rate of this case is extremely low, about 1/200,000 births, fertilized from 2 eggs and 2 sperm. In which, 1 egg is divided into 2 separate zygotes, 1 egg remains intact" - said Dr. Chung.
Dr. Chung also recommends that pregnant women with multiple pregnancies should pay attention to their diet when the nutritional needs of the fetus double or triple, the mother needs to provide more nutrients to reduce the risk of malnutrition for the newborn later. In particular, the pregnancy should be closely monitored and regular check-ups should be performed at specialized obstetric facilities.
