From March 20 to 23 alone, there were 3 consecutive forest fires in Bac Kan province.
On the evening of March 20, a forest fire broke out in Groups 11 and 12, Phung Chi Kien Ward, Bac Kan City. The fire started from a small fire on the top of a hill in the Mo Forest area, in Group 11.
At 8:00 p.m. the same day, the fire broke out and spread to the nearby reed forest. After much effort, the authorities were able to extinguish the fire at 10:00 p.m. the same day.
Then, at around 2:00 p.m. on March 21, a forest fire broke out in group 1A, Duc Xuan ward, Bac Kan city.
The burned forest area is located close to residential areas, mainly reed hills, dry grass, and mixed wood, so the fire spread quickly in dry weather.
The fire prevention, firefighting and rescue police force promptly mobilized fire trucks and personnel to extinguish the fire after 30 minutes, preventing it from spreading.
The cause of the fire was determined to be due to people's carelessness while burning trash, allowing the fire to spread into the forest.
Just one day later, at around 1:00 p.m. on March 22, another forest fire broke out in Na Di village, Duong Quang commune, Bac Kan city.
The burned forest area is mainly 4 to 5 year old tallow forest of people in Na Di village.
Authorities have mobilized a large number of personnel to fight the fire. However, due to the widespread fire and difficult terrain, it will take a long time to completely extinguish the fire.
The cause of the fire was determined to be due to people's carelessness when burning trash, allowing the fire to spread into the forest.
Since the beginning of 2025, the situation of forest fires and the risk of forest fires in Bac Kan has been very complicated.
Since January, the province has experienced more than 10 forest fires, damaging about 40 hectares of forest. The number of forest fires since the beginning of the year has exceeded the total number of forest fires in 2024.
The main causes of the fires are due to careless use of fire by foresters; handling vegetation for afforestation without supervision or monitoring; burning trash near the forest...
Meanwhile, in the past 3 months, there has been almost no rain in the province, the prolonged dry weather has led to an increased risk of forest fires. Most localities have raised the forest fire warning to the highest level.
Bac Kan is the province with the highest forest coverage in the country with over 374,000 hectares, of which nearly 272,000 hectares are natural forests and over 102,000 hectares are planted forests. If drastic preventive measures are not taken, the risk of large-scale fires can occur at any time.
Bac Kan province also directed the forest rangers to increase patrolling and forest inspection; ensure more than 50% of the regular staff are at the grassroots level; guide people to handle vegetation to ensure the correct area and safety.
The province also requires localities to do a good job of forest fire prevention and fighting; increase inspections of high-risk areas; and strictly prohibit all acts of using fire in and near forests on days with high forest fire forecast levels.
