Nguyen Thi Oanh has no medal at the Asian tournament.

After finishing only 5th in the 1,500m event, Nguyen Thi Oanh entered the final event at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships: 3,000m steeplechase.

This event is a strong point, bringing many titles to the athlete from Bac Giang . Nguyen Thi Oanh currently holds both the national record (9 minutes 43 seconds 83) and the SEA Games record (9 minutes 52 seconds 06).

Nguyen Thi Oanh cannot cause any surprise in the Asian tournament.

Of which, the parameter of 9 minutes 43 seconds 83 set at the continental-level playground - Asiad 2018 in Indonesia is still Nguyen Thi Oanh's best achievement in the 3,000m obstacle race.

Entering the race, Nguyen Thi Oanh faced very strong opponents, such as Xu Shuang Shuang (China, best personal record 9 minutes 11 seconds 08), Parul Chaudhary (India, 9 minutes 29 seconds 51), African athlete Jepkemei (Kazakhstan, 9 minutes 06 seconds 70) or Yoshimura (Japan, 9 minutes 39 seconds 90)...

After 3 rounds, Nguyen Thi Oanh dropped to 6th place, then to 7th place in the next round. Obviously, the continental playground with top opponents is a huge challenge for the 32nd SEA Games champion.

In the following rounds, Nguyen Thi Oanh was still left behind by the leading group (5 athletes) by several dozen meters. Her great efforts helped the athlete born in 1995 to rise to 6th place, before finishing with a time of 10 minutes 09 seconds 62. The gold medal winner was Chaudhary (India), with a time of 9 minutes 38 seconds 76.

Nguyen Thi Oanh's result was 31 seconds behind the leader, and 26 seconds behind her own best result. All of this shows that the continental playing field is really harsh for Vietnamese athletes, even though Nguyen Thi Oanh is unrivaled in the SEA Games arena.

Also on July 14, besides the spotlight Nguyen Thi Oanh, there is also Tran Thi Nhi Yen in the final of the women's 100m event (competing at 7:40 p.m.).

In other events, Ngan Ngoc Nghia (men's 100m) and Nguyen Trung Cuong (3,000m steeplechase) both failed to compete, with Trung Cuong having to withdraw due to health problems. Meanwhile, Bui Thi Thu Thao (long jump) is competing.

Up to now, Vietnamese athletics has only had 1 bronze medal by Nguyen Thi Huong in the triple jump event.
