1. In an era where technology changes every day, journalists are forced to move faster to avoid being left behind. For editor Vo Ngoc Khang Nam ( Long An Newspaper and Radio and Television Station), adapting, learning and mastering technology is not only a professional requirement but also a way for him to affirm his own mark in the era of multi-platform journalism.
When asked about the most important skill in the digital age, he did not hesitate to answer: “That is the ability to produce and edit videos . Videos are dominating modern media platforms such as TikTok, Facebook Reels, YouTube Shorts, ... and even online newspapers and online television. The ability to tell stories with animations, sounds and graphics helps information become more vivid and spread more easily to all audiences, especially young people."
Editor Vo Ngoc Khang Nam strives to perfect his multimedia skills to bring quality, attractive information to readers and audiences.
The clearest proof is that he is operating the TikTok Longantv channel of Long An Newspaper and Radio and Television Station with more than 685,000 followers and nearly 14.7 million likes, reaching an average of 20-25 million views per week. However, for a journalist, technology is not only a tool but also a challenge. Mr. Nam admits that "mastering technology" is very difficult and requires many factors.
He said: “We can approach and understand how each platform works to optimize efficiency, but very few people can fully control it. There are even times when the channel's interaction decreases, I have to carefully check the posted content, safety features and common errors to make timely adjustments.”
For him, technological pressure is the driving force for him to continuously learn through online courses, foreign documents or sharing experiences from the journalism community. The shift from traditional journalism to multi-platform journalism is an inevitable trend. To meet this, each journalist and reporter will have to be "multi-talented" by doing more work, filming, taking photos, recording, appearing on the scene, and even livestreaming if necessary. "Not everyone can change their working methods, but if they don't change, they will definitely fall behind," Nam affirmed.
2. As a technician at the Electronic Newspaper and Digital Content Department (Long An Newspaper and Radio and Television Station), Mr. Huynh Manh Khang is responsible for the stable operation of the electronic newspaper's technical system, including the website, social networking platforms and tools for digital content production. In addition, he also participates in maintaining the hosting server, ensuring network security, handling technical errors that arise, supporting reporters and editors in posting, optimizing digital content, designing infographics, and emagazines .
According to technician Huynh Manh Khang, journalists in the digital age need to be able to adapt quickly and master new technology.
To serve his work, he constantly researches, learns and masters useful tools (Adobe Photoshop, Canva, Gemini), equips himself with skills in CMS (Content Management System), website optimization,... and updates new technologies to avoid falling behind.
"In the press environment, news always needs to be updated continuously, so any technical problems need to be handled immediately to avoid interrupting information to readers. I am fortunate to have a solid knowledge base from the Electronics and Telecommunications industry, so I grasp technical principles quite quickly. My colleagues in the department are also very enthusiastic and willing to share their experiences, helping me integrate better" - Mr. Khang shared.
When asked about the qualities of young journalists, Mr. Khang emphasized the “personal mark”. According to him, each reporter, no matter what genre of journalism they do, must determine a unique way of expressing themselves in each product, thereby creating an unmistakable mark. And that mark can only be formed when the person has a “clear professional mindset”, analytical ability, creativity and solid professional ethics.
3. Learning how to master digital platforms is not only a mandatory requirement in the technology era, it is also a journey of self-affirmation for young collaborators in the journalism environment. For collaborator Truong Van Ran (working at the Center for Culture, Information and Broadcasting of Vinh Hung district), journalists, whether at the provincial or local level, need the courage to adapt to the digital age if they do not want to be left behind. The opportunity to become a journalist came to Mr. Ran in November 2023, because his old job was unstable, he decided to leave Ho Chi Minh City to return to his hometown to find a new direction. When he first started working, he was overwhelmed by the new skills of writing news, filming, editing videos, reporting, etc.
Collaborator Truong Van Ran (Culture, Information and Broadcasting Center of Vinh Hung district) always cultivates and applies technology to work.
In addition to writing skills, sharp thinking, the ability to withstand pressure and professional ethics, modern journalists also need to master technology to convey information quickly and accurately on digital platforms. Understanding this, Mr. Ran proactively learned more experience and professional skills from his colleagues.
Originally a technology student, he quickly became familiar with the equipment, machines, and software used for filming and editing. He said: “I often asked to go with my seniors to film to learn how to take angles, adjust light and dark, and ask questions about things I didn’t know. I also often went on social media platforms to learn more about photography, filming, and video editing skills.”
For him, the greatest strength of a digital journalist is the ability to constantly adapt. He often reminds himself to update new technology and software to serve his work. He believes: “Adapting to new technology helps us approach and grasp people’s psychology more easily. By understanding how people search for information, we can improve the effectiveness of propaganda for local people.”
As technology continues to change, multimedia skills and the ability to master digital technology are no longer advantages but mandatory requirements for every modern journalist. The spirit of progress, daring to think, daring to do is the key to helping the press constantly innovate, improve quality, and continue to be a reliable communication channel for the public./.
