Journalist Tran Mai Hanh was born on January 1, 1943 in Hai Duong city, Hai Duong province.
He graduated from the University of Literature (now the Faculty of Literature, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi) and then worked as a journalist at Vietnam News Agency.
He was a journalist of the News Agency present at noon on April 30, 1975 at the Independence Palace.
In 1996, he was appointed General Director of Voice of Vietnam Radio Station and was elected as a member of the Party Central Committee for the 8th and 9th terms.
He was also elected as a delegate to the 10th National Assembly of Vietnam.
But in 2003, in the Nam Cam case, Mr. Tran Mai Hanh was accused of accepting bribes and revealing secrets to absolve Nam Cam. He was stripped of all his positions.
At that time, he was holding the role of Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Journalists Association and Editor-in-Chief of the Newspaper Nha Bao & Cong Luan .
In the appeal hearing of the Năm Cam case, he was sentenced to 9 years in prison. However, he was pardoned on September 2, 2005, after serving 2 years of his sentence.
After being released from prison, he continued to write articles and novels.
Mr. Tran Mai Hanh has a number of works such as : Thu Bon Sun, Love and Death Penalty, Collapse and Confession (1985), Doomsday, War Account 1-2-3-4.75 (2017), A war account 1-2-3-4.75 (English version of War Account 1-2-3-4.75 ), Preface to a love, The Time I Lived (2018).
In which, the novel War Minutes 1-2-3-4.75 was awarded the Vietnam Writers Association Award in 2014 in the prose category, and the ASEAN Literature Award in 2015.
Before that, right from the time he started writing, he won the prize in the short story contest of Van Nghe newspaper 1970 - 1971.
Journalist Hong Thanh Quang said that he had a period of time working as a journalist under the leadership of journalist Tran Mai Hanh. Mr. Quang greatly respected the journalist's talent, organization and vision.
