Composer Doan Thu Tra, daughter of composer Doan Bong, told Tuoi Tre Online that her father passed away at 5 am that same day due to old age and weakness.
Ms. Tra said that he was frail all year round and often suffered from tracheal problems, so his passing was too sudden because no one, not even he himself, thought he would pass away so soon.
Not long ago, musician Doan Bong told his daughter that he wished to live to be 120 years old. He also planned to gather his family and friends for an early Tet celebration this year.
"Doan Bong's father is a timeless figure in music ."
According to her, in everyday life, the musician was a warm, approachable person who always thought well of others, lived kindly, optimistically, and loved life. His life also had many difficulties, but he only felt "a little sad" before focusing on his music or enjoying time with his friends and family.
Ms. Thu Tra said her father was "ageless in music." He composed until the end of his life, his latest song being titled "Please Don't Call Me Brother." Speaking about her father Doan Bong's career, she observed, "It was a diverse career; he successfully wrote on many themes."
He wrote many songs about President Ho Chi Minh, the most famous of which is "Singing About Him" . He also wrote " The Truong Sa Military Song ," considered the national anthem of the navy, sung by everyone who goes to the islands; and "The Song of the Fatherland Front ," the traditional song of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, which resonates during major events and spreads widely among the people.
The song "The River of My Homeland, the River of Your Homeland" is performed by People's Artist Thu Hien and People's Artist Trung Duc.
The rivers and his homeland haunted and tormented him constantly.
Born and raised by the Red River in Thuong Tin district ( Hanoi ), his childhood was closely connected to the river, the fields, and the joyful folk games. At the age of 8, he moved to live with his family on Bach Mai street (Hanoi).
Before enrolling at the Vietnam School of Music (now the Vietnam National Academy of Music), he worked for an irrigation enterprise.
While he was alive, composer Doan Bong confided that he loved his homeland as much as he loved the rural areas of the Northern Delta. He loved the banyan trees, the riverbanks, the village squares, and the farmers with their muddy hands and feet, yet still resounding with songs.
The rivers and waterways of his homeland always haunted and stirred his heart. That's why, when standing before rivers, the musician found so much creative inspiration.
Composer Doan Bong also has many beloved sentimental songs about his homeland, such as "The River of My Homeland, the River of Your Homeland"; "Hanoi, My Memories"; "Come Back to Ha Tay, My Dear"; "My Mother"...
Besides composing music, he also writes poetry, such as the collection "Sad Notes ". In 2017, he received the State Prize for Literature and Arts.
