Car imports increased by nearly 2,700 units in February

According to data released by the General Department of Customs (Ministry of Finance) today, March 11, in February, the country imported 9,650 complete cars of all kinds with a total value of 203.4 million USD, an increase of 38.7% in volume and 40.1% in value compared to the previous month.

Indonesia is Vietnam's leading automobile import market with 4,441 vehicles, accounting for 46% of the country's total imported vehicles in the month; the value reached 64.4 million USD, accounting for 31.17% of the country's total import value. Next, Vietnam imported 3,788 completely built-up cars with a value of 76.9 million USD from Thailand in February.

Thus, the number of imported cars from the two Southeast Asian markets alone reached 8,229 cars, accounting for 85.2% of the total number of imported cars nationwide in the month.

Although imports increased in February, in the first two months of the year, Vietnam's total automobile imports were still much lower than the same period in 2023. By the end of February, the country imported 16,452 automobiles worth 345.15 million USD, down 38.5% in volume and 39.7% in value compared to the same period last year.

Previously, in the first month of this year, the number of completely built-up cars of all types registered for import customs declarations decreased by 9.1% (equivalent to a decrease of 695 cars) compared to the import volume in December 2023.

Specifically, the import volume in January was 6,955 units, reaching over 145 million USD. Meanwhile, the General Department of Customs recorded 7,650 imported complete automobiles of all kinds in December 2023 with a value of 175 million USD.

In January, all types of completely built-up cars registered for customs procedures imported into Vietnam mainly originated from 3 main markets: Indonesia with 2,647 units, China with 1,987 units and Thailand with 1,858 units. The total number of imported cars from these 3 markets was 6,492 units, accounting for 93% of the total number of imported cars into Vietnam in the month.
