Comprehensive training with high quality
Every country has its own way of selecting and training talented people. In our country, where land is limited, population is large and there are still difficulties, creating a good learning environment to nurture and develop talents from a young age is absolutely right and necessary. We should shift the focus from “specialized” training to “comprehensive and high-quality” training for excellent or especially gifted students.
Specifically, it is necessary to consider converting the Mathematics - Information Technology major of Hanoi National University of Education, along with other major majors, into a high school with two majors in natural sciences and social sciences. Students are selected who are either excellent in all aspects of natural/social sciences, or have outstanding talent in one (or several) subjects of natural/social sciences at secondary school level. They are given comprehensive education, good at Vietnamese and English. Students with outstanding talent in a certain subject will participate in extracurricular activities in groups led by good teachers. The school has teachers who are good at all subjects and have good learning conditions.
This type of school should be established instead of a specialized school for the following reason: Talented people must be trained and then mature through practice. This is a path that takes decades, so we should not direct students too early into a narrow field of science, even if they have some talent. People need to have comprehensive understanding, before and at the same time as entering a narrow field.
Professor Ho Tu Bao
Talented people should always be given priority.
In American high schools, there are no special programs to nurture students. If you have talent, you can try your hand at university or graduate school at prestigious schools. American high schools have clubs such as Math, Chemistry, Sports... Students can join clubs that they like. American students are interested in prestigious universities, they do not pay attention to exams and do not care about awards. The Americaneducation system is very flexible, whoever is good is automatically promoted. There have been many cases like this: a student entered MIT (the leading technical school in the US), seeing that this student was so good, the school gave her a special test, this student finished, the next day the school awarded her a bachelor's degree. So, studying for a bachelor's degree only takes 1 day! There was also a case of a student receiving a doctorate from Princeton University after 3 days. Recently, Vietnamese-American female student Alexandria Huynh received a scholarship for a doctoral program at Harvard University when she was only 17 years old.

* "Priority should be given to specialized schools, for example, the right to enter university should be guaranteed for specialized students so that they will not be distracted but will focus more on their specialized subjects and contribute more to science." ( Ms. Le Quynh Lien - Head of Chemistry Group, Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Ho Chi Minh City) * "There should be a system of faculties and universities that attract specialized students to create opportunities for them to continue developing the specialized fields they have studied in high school." ( Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan - Director of Nam Dinh Department of Education and Training) * "There needs to be a suitable treatment for specialized students such as: exemption from high school graduation exams, winning national prizes will be directly admitted to universities with majors suitable for the specialized subject." ( Mr. Le Thanh Thai - Principal of Practical High School - Ho Chi Minh City University of Education) * “Do not force students to focus too much effort and time studying a few specialized subjects, but rather let them freely develop what they have acquired according to a broad and deep learning strategy.” ( Dr. Nguyen Anh Dung - Deputy Director of the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences) |
