Many spring rice fields in Nghe An were flooded and broken due to heavy rain and storms.

Since the evening of May 10, several localities in Nghe An have experienced prolonged heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms, causing many areas of spring rice to be flooded and broken.

Records on the morning of May 11 in Long Thanh commune (Yen Thanh) showed that many rice fields were submerged in water, some areas were broken. Ms. Tran Thi Lam, a local resident, said: "My family has 3 sao of rice fields that are about to be harvested, but all 3 are submerged. If the water does not recede in time, the damage will be significant."

According to Mr. Nguyen Van De - Chairman of Long Thanh Commune People's Committee, the whole commune has about 553 hectares of spring rice, of which more than 130 hectares have been affected by heavy rain. The commune government is urgently implementing drainage measures, directing hamlets to mobilize manpower to erect and bundle fallen rice. At the same time, the commune has mobilized more than 20 harvesters ready to support farmers, expected to harvest simultaneously in the next 7-10 days.

Not only Long Thanh commune, many other communes such as Nam Thanh, Van Tu, Van Thanh also recorded the situation of some rice areas being locally flooded.

Mr. Le Van Hong - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Yen Thanh district said that this spring crop, the whole district planted more than 12,790 hectares of rice. The rain on the night of May 10 caused about 200 hectares of rice to be partially flooded. The district is directing localities to urgently take measures such as dredging canals to drain water, bundling fallen rice, and after 3-5 days when the weather is favorable, speed up the harvest progress to minimize losses for farmers.

In Dien Chau district, due to the impact of heavy rain on May 11, many rice fields in the area were severely damaged. According to Mr. Le The Hieu - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dien Chau district, up to now, the whole district has about 500 hectares of rice flooded and broken, mainly concentrated in communes such as Dien Thai, Dien Hoang, Dien Dong...

Currently, due to the rising tide, drainage work is facing many difficulties. In this situation, the district is urgently directing people to focus on clearing blockages in the internal drainage system; especially in the coming sunny days, taking advantage of favorable weather to harvest in areas where rice has ripened to minimize risks.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Hanh - Director of Dien Chau Irrigation Enterprise said that Dien Thanh - Dien Chau drainage sluice plays an important role in draining water for Dien Chau and Yen Thanh districts. However, due to high tides, since the morning of May 11, drainage work has encountered many difficulties. It was not until about 2:30 p.m. of the same day, when the tide began to recede, that the unit took the opportunity to simultaneously open 4 sluice gates with a discharge flow of nearly 450 m³/s to promptly drain water and minimize damage to the two localities./.
