The online exhibition "Dear Compatriots of the Capital!" commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2024) was inaugurated on the afternoon of September 20th by the Hoan Kiem District People's Committee (Hanoi) in coordination with the National Archives Center I (Department of Archives and Records, Ministry of Interior ).
The exhibition presents to the general public archival documents and illustrative images about the struggle against French colonialism by the people and army of Hanoi from the late 19th century to 1954, including many representative documents published for the first time, especially numerous revolutionary leaflets seized by French police in Hanoi.
Documents and images are presented in a 3D space, tracing the journey from Hanoi Citadel to Dong Xuan Market, through the Old Quarter and the Grand Theatre Square, towards the Northern Palace. Each space corresponds to different sections of the exhibition, offering the public an engaging and enriching experience .
According to Pham Tuan Long, Chairman of the Hoan Kiem District People's Committee, Hoan Kiem is one of the four core districts of Hanoi, and was the site of many activities and events 70 years ago - the Day of Liberation and Takeover of the Capital.
In accordance with the plan of the Hanoi People's Committee on organizing activities to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of the Capital, the District People's Committee, in coordination with the National Archives Center I, organized the opening ceremony of the online exhibition "Dear Compatriots of the Capital!".
The exhibition presents many new, previously unpublished documents and valuable historical information, helping people nationwide, especially those in Hanoi, to gain a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the capital city.
Sharing his thoughts on organizing the exhibition's opening ceremony within the grounds of the former Northern Government House (now the Government Guest House), a special revolutionary historical site in Hanoi, closely associated with the glorious August Revolution of 1945, and recalling the heroic events of the nation, the Director of the State Archives and Records Department, Dang Thanh Tung, stated that the launch of the 3D online exhibition on the theme of revolutionary struggle is extremely significant for the people of Hanoi in particular and the people of the whole country in general, especially in the context of today's strong digital transformation. Through this, it provides useful information about the history of Hanoi – a land of a thousand years of culture, heroism, and peace in the flow of Vietnamese history, contributing to nurturing patriotism and pride among the people of Hanoi, alongside the development of the cultural industry in the capital; bringing about positive and educational effects.
The online exhibition "Oh, fellow citizens of the capital!" allows viewers to experience Hanoi during the resistance war against the French anytime, anywhere, at the following addresses: https://archives.org.vn/hoidongbaothudo/ and https://hoankiem.hanoi.gov.vn/hoidongbaothudo/.
The exhibition is divided into three parts. Part 1, themed "Hanoi Burning, Smoke and Fire Filling the Sky," presents photographic documents about the early stages of the French colonial invasion of Hanoi. Part 2, themed "Hanoi Rises Up," introduces documents and images about the revolutionary struggles in Hanoi from 1930 to 1954. Part 3, "Hanoi on the Day of Victory," presents photographic documents and images of the day of liberation, forever echoing the triumphant anthem.
"Fellow countrymen of the capital!" was a familiar call during the resistance against the French in Hanoi. Throughout nearly a century under French colonial rule, especially since the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, many vigorous mass movements took place, laying the groundwork for subsequent uprisings.
The August 1945 General Uprising, in the form of demonstrations by 200,000 people from Hanoi's inner and outer districts, achieved a glorious victory. From then on, the government in Hanoi fell into the hands of the Viet Minh. Hanoi was reborn and celebrated Independence Day - National Day on September 2nd.
The smoke and flames of war continued to engulf the streets of Hanoi from the end of 1946 when the French colonialists returned to invade our country. Responding to President Ho Chi Minh's call for nationwide resistance, the entire army and people of Hanoi fought bravely, determined to sacrifice everything for their beloved capital. After eight years of fierce resistance, the people of Hanoi joyfully welcomed the victorious army that liberated the city. The red flag with a yellow star flew high on the Hanoi flagpole, marking the end of a journey full of hardship and sacrifice, but also extremely glorious and heroic.
Through the ups and downs of history, Thang Long-Hanoi remains the beloved capital and pride of the entire nation, a place where the thousand-year-old cultural essence of the Vietnamese people converges. Located in the heart of Hanoi, Hoan Kiem District is steeped in the rich 1000-year tradition of Thang Long-Hanoi, boasting the ancient beauty of the Hoan Kiem Lake complex – a special national monument – and the Hanoi Old Quarter – a national historical site. Hoan Kiem is also the administrative, political, economic, and cultural center of the city, containing a treasure trove of tangible values with 190 historical and cultural relics and revolutionary-resistance war sites.
