(CPV) - On June 26, Governor of Nuevo Leon state, Mexico, Mr. Samuel Garcia announced that the 2022-2023 school year will end earlier than expected due to extreme heat causing abnormally high temperatures in most areas across the country.
According to Mr. Samuel Garcia, schools in this state will end the school year on June 29 instead of July 19 as prescribed by the Departmentof Education (SEP).
The state of Nuevo Leon is still suffering from a heat wave that has seen temperatures exceed 47 degrees Celsius in some areas, even though the third heat wave in the country since the beginning of the year ended last weekend.
During a press conference, Governor Garcia and Nuevo Leon State Education Secretary Sofialeticia Morales stressed that the early end of the school year is to protect the health of students, although the weather is forecast to cool down this week.
Mr. Garcia emphasized that the decision to close schools early was made after consulting with parents, teachers and education union leaders. According to Mr. Garcia, many educational facilities in Nuevo Leon are still not equipped with air conditioning systems.
Sofialeticia Morales stressed that the final exams of the school year will be held on June 29. After that, educational institutions will partially open from July 13-19 to provide voluntary summer courses organized by Save the Children and Lego for students in need.
The Governor of Nuevo Leon is working with the Mexican Electricity Corporation (CFE) and partners to discuss the provision of equipment to install air conditioning systems in public educational institutions.
Previously, on June 17, the Mexican Ministry of Health announced that 7 people had died from heatstroke and dehydration from April 14 to June 12. According to meteorological experts at the National University of Mexico (UNAM), a new heat wave could continue to appear in this Central American country in early July, with temperatures even higher than the last 3 heat waves./.
