According to information from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in the first half of November 2023, pangasius exports to the EU reached more than 6 million USD, down 24% compared to the same period last year. As of November 15, 2023, the EU bought more than 150 million USD of pangasius from Vietnam, down 17% compared to the same period in 2022.
VASEP believes that Vietnam’s pangasius export industry is still gradually on the way to returning to the EU. Customers in this market are considered to be increasingly demanding and careful in choosing food, especially consumers in Germany.
According to VASEP experts, exports to the EU market have improved in the last months of 2023, showing that consumer demand has not decreased. Therefore, VASEP experts recommend that businesses need to prepare stable sources of goods and provide timely goods to maintain exports to this market, especially in the current difficult global context.
Pangasius exports to the EU are back on track |
Previously, in September and October 2023, pangasius export turnover to the EU continuously grew positively and remained at 10-11% compared to the same period in 2022. In particular, Germany increased its import of Vietnamese pangasius by 2.5 times in both September and October 2023, with values reaching 5.5 million USD and 6.3 million USD, respectively. This is also the highest value since the beginning of this year in this country's pangasius consumption.
According to data from the International Trade Center (ITC), as of September 2023, Germany purchased nearly 8,000 tons of whitefish (mainly pangasius) from Vietnam worth more than 32 million USD. This figure exceeds the volume that Germany imported from Vietnam in the whole of 2022. According to ITC, Vietnam is the world's 4th largest supplier of whitefish to Germany, after China, the US and Norway.
As for the Dutch market, as of November 15, 2023, this market is still leading the EU in importing pangasius from Vietnam with more than 39 million USD. In the first half of November 2023 alone, this country consumed nearly 2 million USD of Vietnamese pangasius products.
Although the export value to the Netherlands in the first half of November decreased, the Netherlands still "left far behind" other countries in the bloc in terms of consumption of Vietnamese pangasius.
