Teacher with nearly 30 years of experience working with disabled students

Nghe An Province Center for Education and Vocational Training for the Disabled in Nghi Phu Commune, Vinh City, Nghe An Province, currently has about 280 students with intellectual and motor disabilities studying. Of these, 180 students live far away and cannot be picked up and dropped off daily, so they are arranged to stay in the dormitory right at the school for convenience in studying.

Being born with bad luck, they have to suffer from physical disabilities. But all the students here are very hard-working. They all try hard in their studies to overcome their personal adversities, with the hope of having a job, helping their family and society.

In addition to teaching culture, Nghe An Center for Education and Vocational Training for the Disabled also organizes vocational training and career guidance classes, opening bright doors for special students. To learn a trade, students must be 14 years old or older, when they have enough cognitive ability to be able to master their lives.

At the Nghe An Province Vocational Training Center for the Disabled, each class has 18 students, aged from 8 to 20. Each student has a different personality, type of illness, and syndrome. Therefore, teachers here must learn and understand the circumstances of each student.

Ms. Dinh Thi Sa - teacher of the Center for Education and Vocational Training for the Disabled in Nghe An province said: "The most difficult thing is that in the same class, each student has a different situation. The family situation and the students themselves are all different. Therefore, in addition to teaching together, teachers also have to depend on each student's ability to absorb knowledge to have a separate tutoring method. For each student, there needs to be a different way to help them absorb knowledge."

Ms. Phan Viet Phuong is a teacher with nearly 30 years of experience teaching students with disabilities. That is also the time she has been attached to many classes of students. With decades of experience, but with each new class of students, the teacher has to start from scratch.

"In the learning process, for students to progress and integrate into the community depends largely on the students themselves. The rest is the efforts of teachers and families. To do this, teachers need to love children, be persistent and patient. In particular, teachers must always be willing to share to help students no longer feel inferior about their own shortcomings. Only then can students improve and make efforts in their studies," Ms. Phan Viet Phuong shared.

All students when they first enter the center are taught sign language so that teachers and students can easily communicate with each other. Teachers must also choose the way of speaking that is appropriate to the characteristics of the children. Teachers can combine words and gestures to create appeal and attract students.

Ms. Phan Viet Phuong said: "Up to now, some generations of my students have graduated, gone to work and built their own homes. Some of them have now become owners of garment factories. Seeing them grow up and become independent is my happiness and also the motivation for me to continue to stick with and contribute to my work."

Student scared teacher, burst into tears on first day of class

Ms. Do Thi Trang - Head of the sewing class 1 shared about her memories of the first time she came to class. "At that time, a student with a physical disability was sitting and studying normally, suddenly had an epileptic seizure, fell to the ground and convulsed. The first time I came to school and encountered this situation, I was so scared that I burst into tears, not knowing how to handle the situation. Luckily, at that time, a student in the class had time to go to the medical room to call another teacher to handle the situation in time."

This is one of many situations that teachers at the special school have to deal with during class hours. After that incident, this female teacher had to equip herself with some skills to handle situations when students suddenly fall ill.

"For the students here, even if it is just a very small progress, we need to encourage and motivate them appropriately so that they feel loved. That way, the students will be excited to study and make more efforts. In addition to professional knowledge, to teach vocational skills to disabled students, teachers also need a warm and patient heart," Ms. Do Thi Trang confided.

In sewing classes, there are many students who cannot speak or hear. Therefore, it is very difficult for teachers to convey to students the idea, the method, and how to do it correctly and beautifully. Therefore, teachers need to be very patient and patient in teaching them little by little.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Thang - Director of Nghe An Center for Education and Vocational Training for the Disabled - said that in addition to teaching culture, this center also teaches sewing, carpentry, computers, etc. to students. Before learning a profession, teachers will survey the wishes of students and parents and base on their abilities to orient them to learn a suitable profession. With the efforts of teachers at the center, many classes of students have become professionals and have jobs to support themselves. The achievements of the students are the greatest happiness of the teachers here.
