Bobbin lace making
Bobbin lace making is a traditional Slovenian craft, inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2018. To create patterns, people draw patterns on paper and attach them to a cylindrical pillow, then braid and twist threads alternately on bobbins (spools), creating lace strips or predetermined shapes.
For centuries, this unique twisting and coiling skill has been passed down through generations through artisans or training schools. The most famous is the lace school in Idrija, which has been operating continuously for over 140 years.
In addition, Slovenia has more than 120 bobbin lace associations and groups. Lace is used to decorate clothing and fashion accessories, church furniture and home textiles; it is also a source of creative inspiration in other artistic fields.
