After 2 years of research, artist Nguyen Thanh Thao (36 years old, residing at 79 Dao Duy Anh, Hue City, Thua Thien - Hue) found a solution to turn lotus leaves into a durable material for the conical hat weaving profession (in 2017).
With his unique processing method, Mr. Thao's lotus leaf hat combined with bamboo "bones" has created a traditional hat that is more symbolic of the Vietnamese people.
Not only stopping at the original green lotus leaf hat designs, artist Nguyen Thanh Thao also designed artistic designs. Among them, lotus leaf hats with embroidered motifs or painted images are loved by many people to buy with a value no different from fine art works.

From the initial product of lotus leaf hats, after 7 years of starting a business, the artist has developed the brand "Sen Thao" with many other unique handmade products, such as: handbags, hand fans...
In particular, in the lotus leaf painting genre, Mr. Thao has created embroidery paintings, installation paintings with lotus pedestals, lotus petals and lotus leaves… with high aesthetic value. Mr. Thao also researched and applied lotus to the interior of restaurants, hotels…
Right in his workshop, there are tables, lamps… that are made very delicately. Recently, Mr. Thao accepted an invitation to design for a restaurant that wanted to use lotus leaves as wall partitions in Japanese style.
This is a new design to replace the usual paper material that Mr. Thao is very eager to conquer.
Lotus hat with the combination of two traditional materials, lotus and bamboo, becomes a highly symbolic handicraft product.
"I want lotus to not only be beautiful and fragrant in the lake, in every cup of tea... but also bring more use value. As an artist, my dream is for lotus to become works of art with natural beauty. If I have the conditions, I will open a facility to gather artisans to both demonstrate making lotus hats and lotus handicrafts and promote the image of Vietnamese lotus to the world ," Mr. Thao shared.

With careful processing and color fixing agent, the lotus leaf hat will be durable over time. Each hat like this will be sold on the market at a price of about 180,000 - 200,000 VND/hat.
Besides the plain green hats, artist Nguyen Thanh Thao also creates conical hats with beautiful drawings.
With high perfection in processing as well as aesthetic design, lotus leaf hats with embroidery become valuable works of art.
