Ninh Thuan: Successful surgery for patient with rare endocrine disease

On the afternoon of October 20, the Board of Directors of Ninh Thuan General Hospital (Khanh Hoa province) announced that the hospital's General Surgery Department team had successfully performed surgery on a male patient, Nguyen Van Chi (46 years old, residing in Ca Na commune, Khanh Hoa province), who had a parathyroid tumor - a rare endocrine disease that can cause calcium metabolism disorders and seriously affect health if not promptly intervened and treated.

According to Master, Specialist II Doctor Do Quyen, Deputy Head of the General Surgery Department - Ninh Thuan General Hospital, the patient had previously had a general examination and was diagnosed with a thyroid problem. Although he had been monitored for 5-6 years, recently, when the patient visited the hospital and performed paraclinical tests, the doctor discovered a tumor and suspected it originated from the parathyroid gland - a location with many important blood vessel and nerve structures in the neck area.

Immediately after that, the patient was assigned by the doctors of the General Surgery Department to have surgery to remove the parathyroid gland tumor. The surgery was performed by the team of the General Surgery Department with precision and care in every step.

Doctors carefully dissect the tumor, minimizing bleeding and avoiding tumor rupture; preserving the vocal cords as much as possible, helping the patient not to have a hoarse voice after surgery.

The tumor was determined to be approximately 2 x 1.5 cm in size, completely removed, and a biopsy was performed to determine the nature of the tumor.

After surgery, the patient's health was stable, with no signs of hoarseness or post-operative complications, and is expected to be discharged in the near future.

Master, Specialist II Doctor Do Quyen shared that parathyroid adenoma is a rare endocrine disease, often difficult to diagnose because it is easily confused with other neck tumors. The disease can cause calcium metabolism disorders in the body, affecting the bones and nervous system. Early detection and timely treatment play an important role, helping patients recover quickly and minimizing dangerous complications.
