Efforts to rebuild the homeland

Throughout its history, exactly 50 years since the liberation of the South and the reunification of the country, Tien Giang has continuously strived and made significant progress, steadily entering a new era of national development.

After a long period of war devastation, the province suffered severe consequences. Healing the wounds of war requires time and much effort. However, these difficulties have fostered a spirit of self-reliance and resilience, enabling Tien Giang to achieve the successes it enjoys today.

OVERCOMING DIFFICULTIES

April 30, 1975, was a special event for the entire nation. It marked the moment of national independence and reunification. It also marked the beginning of the reconstruction of the homeland after years of devastating war.

Like the rest of the country, Tien Giang was no exception. However, the post-war reconstruction was not an easy task, especially for a province with a small land area and a large population, characterized by predominantly agricultural production that remained poor and backward like Tien Giang.

In that context, deeply understanding the policies and guidelines of the Central Party Committee, and upholding the tradition of unwavering resilience and the diligent and creative spirit of the people, the Tien Giang Party Committee focused all its efforts on comprehensively leading the work of restoring, reforming, and developing the economy .

Through numerous efforts and the synchronized implementation of various solutions, just two years after the complete liberation of Southern Vietnam (1975-1976), the Party Committee and people of Tien Giang province achieved tremendous successes, such as building a complete revolutionary government system from the provincial to the commune level, gradually stabilizing social order, completing the management of the puppet army and government, bringing the majority of farmers back to their old fields to restore production, sweeping away the remnants of the feudal regime, and ensuring that all activities of the people gradually stabilized. This was a very important initial foundation and premise for the people of Tien Giang to steadily move forward in building a prosperous and beautiful homeland in the following years.

One of the key tasks of Tien Giang after the complete liberation of Southern Vietnam was to utilize and exploit its potential to promote economic development and improve the lives of its people. Therefore, the policy of economic recovery and development was concretized through resolutions of Tien Giang's Party congresses.

Driven by practical demands, Tien Giang province has focused on implementing important programs and projects in the economic field. Typical examples include the program to develop the barren land of Dong Thap Muoi and the policy of desalinating the Go Cong area.

These programs and plans were implemented when Tien Giang embarked on the task of economic recovery and development immediately after the complete liberation and reunification of the South. The economic development front, especially in the agricultural sector, continued for a long period.

Particularly from 1983 to 1985, Tien Giang effectively implemented programs such as the integrated exploitation of high-quality rice growing areas, the marine exploitation program, the program for building specialized industrial crop growing areas, the integrated exploitation of garden economy, and the program for reorganizing and developing industry and small-scale handicrafts…

WINDS OF INNOVATION

As the winds of reform, which began in 1986, spread throughout the country, Tien Giang also began its own reform efforts. Besides overcoming the limitations of previous economic development, Tien Giang focused on implementing economic programs; at the same time, it concentrated all its efforts on reorganizing production, developing transportation and irrigation, organizing land reclamation, and striving to apply scientific and technological advancements to intensive farming and crop production, fulfilling the slogan "Food is the Fatherland."

A clear highlight of the economic transformation towards a multi-component commodity production system, operating under a market mechanism with state management, is the initial more comprehensive development of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, achieving and exceeding many important targets, especially in food production and seafood harvesting.

Notably, Tien Giang province achieved a food production of 1 million tons for the first time in 1990 on an area of ​​approximately 100,000 hectares; while aquaculture, fishing, processing, and export of seafood have steadily increased (in 1990, domestic fishing increased by 81%, marine fishing increased by 8%, and export turnover doubled compared to 1986)...

Entering the integration phase, Tien Giang's economy began to transform, gradually achieving the goals of industrialization and modernization. Along with other economic sectors, the private sector is showing a tendency to grow, mobilizing more investment capital into production and business, contributing to the shift in economic structure, promoting competition, and creating new, more dynamic elements within the market economy.

Accordingly, industrial and handicraft production has also grown, adopting new technologies, gradually improving product quality, and expanding consumer markets. Industries with the potential to leverage competitive advantages, dominate the domestic market, and boost exports include: agricultural and aquatic product processing, and garment manufacturing.

From a personal perspective, as a 60-year-old Party member, Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh, Director of Song Tien Joint Stock Company, believes that April 30th this year is perhaps the happiest day of her revolutionary life.

Looking back at Tien Giang's journey over the past 50 years, it can be said that the implementation of policies and guidelines has been closely intertwined, meeting the general needs of society. Although there have been changes over the past 50 years, Tien Giang province has promptly adapted; at the same time, the policies of the Party and State have been applied flexibly and effectively, creating favorable conditions for businesses to develop, such as tax and wage policies.

In particular, Tien Giang province has implemented the policy of caring for families of war veterans, wounded soldiers, and martyrs very well. At the same time, Tien Giang has paid special attention to infrastructure investment, especially transportation infrastructure. As a result, many roads in remote and rural areas, which were once muddy, have now been paved, significantly changing the face of the countryside; order and security are also ensured.

Furthermore, Tien Giang province has also focused on education and training, especially for its staff, civil servants, and public employees. “Looking back over the past years, we see that Tien Giang has changed and grown every year, and this achievement is undeniable. I highly appreciate the leadership and management of Tien Giang province over the past 50 years,” emphasized Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh.
