More than 2.7 million people in North Kivu province will be displaced in 2024. In the fourth quarter of 2024 alone, UN partners reported at least 138 deaths and more than 100 abductions.
The conflict has also affected humanitarian access and forced many international organizations to limit their presence. OCHA calls on all parties to the conflict to ensure the safety of civilians and not impede humanitarian operations.
UN Secretary-General's spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the special envoy for the Great Lakes region, Huang Xia, expressed concern about the security situation in eastern DRC.
Mr. Huang Xia called on the parties to the conflict to prioritize dialogue within the framework of the Luanda and Nairobi regional peace processes, and to refrain from any actions that could violate national and regional commitments.
He also called for the urgent convening of the 12th high-level meeting of the Regional Monitoring Mechanism of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework so that regional heads of state can engage in resolving the ongoing crisis in eastern DRC.
