On November 11, Can Tho General Hospital announced that doctors from many specialties of the hospital had just performed emergency surgery, successfully reattaching and preserving the severed left arm of a patient who had a work accident.
Previously, male patient PMT (born in 1988, residing in Co Do district, Can Tho city) was transporting construction materials at a construction site when his sleeve got caught in a pulley gear and severed his left arm. The patient received first aid and was immediately transferred to Can Tho General Hospital with his severed left arm. At the hospital, the patient was in a state of traumatic shock, blood loss; pulse and blood pressure could not be measured; the patient was lethargic, slow to respond; the wound exposed the arm bone, skin peeled off exposing the Delta muscle, biceps and triceps muscles...
The surgical team included: Department of Emergency Resuscitation; Department of Trauma and Burn Surgery; Department of Thoracic Surgery and Department of Surgery - Anesthesia and Resuscitation to coordinate emergency surgery, hemostasis, fluid transfusion, and treatment of the patient's shock. The surgical team ordered an emergency transfer to the operating room to both resuscitate and perform surgery to reattach the severed arm.
The Department of Trauma Surgery performed combined fixation of the left humerus with an external fixator. The Department of Thoracic Surgery performed debridement of both ends of the arm, cleared the blood vessels of the severed limb, connected the artery to the brachial artery, the vein to the vein, connected the nerves, sutured the muscles and skin, made an incision to relieve pressure on the forearm... After reconnection, the blood circulation was good. Currently, the patient's surgical wound is healing, the hand is alive and well, and is in the process of recovery.
