The patient was brought to the Emergency Department at 4:20 PM on the same day, with a crushed right popliteal fossa following a work accident on a fishing vessel that morning.
After providing first aid to the patient with painkillers, antibiotics to prevent infection, immobilizing the injured limb with bandages, and taking X-rays, doctors in Con Dao consulted remotely with Dr. Hoang Manh Cuong, Director of the Orthopedic Trauma Hospital, and Dr. Mai Trong Tuong, a microsurgery expert.
The consultation determined that the patient had a dislocated knee, a complex wound in the right popliteal fossa, rupture of the popliteal artery, and complete muscle necrosis in the right lower leg at 13 hours, on a background of atherosclerosis. This was a life-threatening emergency due to significant blood loss and a high risk of septic shock from tissue necrosis.
Following the consultation's conclusions, specialist doctors on rotation in Con Dao, along with medical staff from the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center, performed emergency surgery to amputate the lower middle third of the right thigh. The surgery concluded at 11 PM the same day, and the patient is now out of critical condition and receiving post-operative care.
