On December 5, the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center received a stroke patient who was brought in after the “golden hour” for emergency treatment. Dr. Chu Duc Manh, a cerebrovascular pathology specialist at the 115 People’s Hospital who is on rotation in Con Dao, examined, evaluated, and ordered an emergency CT scan right at the Medical Center.
The CT images were immediately connected to People's Hospital 115 for remote consultation with Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor Nguyen Huy Thang and Master, Doctor Pham Nguyen Binh. The experts agreed on the diagnosis of posterior circulation cerebral infarction, 12 hours. Based on new scientific evidence on expanding the treatment window, the team decided to perform intravenous thrombolysis right in Con Dao.
After only 3 hours of drug infusion, the patient's condition improved significantly: he could speak more clearly, walk on his own, and his NIHSS score improved significantly. This is the second case in Con Dao that was saved by thrombolysis under the coordination of rotating doctors and a remote consultation network with leading experts.
The Department of Health assessed that the recent doctor rotation program to Con Dao has brought about many practical results such as successfully handling many serious cases that previously had to be transferred to the mainland, reducing risks in emergency transportation by sea and air. In particular, it has improved the professional practice capacity of the local medical team, creating strong trust among the people in the health system. Thereby contributing to narrowing the health gap, bringing Con Dao closer to the goal of each person receiving equal and timely health care.
