These days, Ms. Luong Thi Yen Van’s family in Xuan Tho Commune, Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province is taking care of and packaging kale plants to send to customers for Tet. According to Ms. Van, kale, also known as curly kale, is a leafy vegetable that is commonly grown in Da Lat and some other places.

During the growing stage, kale leaves are green, purple, pink... like large eye-catching flowers.

According to Ms. Luong Thi Yen Van, when she learned that kale has a unique color, she collected it to grow and sell for Tet.

During the 2025 Lunar New Year, she planted 1,500 kale plants. "I planted one kale plant in each small pot. When they grow up, the young leaves in the middle are purple, pink, white with green veins... At first glance, many people mistake this for a new flower variety," Yen Van shared.

To have ornamental pots of mustard greens to serve the Tet market, Ms. Van imported seeds to grow and plant in small pots from August 2024. After nearly half a year, the plants grew to a height of 20-40cm, with a canopy of leaves nearly 30cm wide.

According to Ms. Van, kale has a bitter taste and is closely related to vegetables such as cabbage and broccoli. Under good care conditions, kale can reach a height of up to 2m.

Currently, each pot of kale is sold by Ms. Van for 120,000-150,000 VND. It is grown and fertilized like other leafy vegetables, so after displaying it for Tet, the homeowner can use the leaves to prepare dishes.

"Colorful kale is popular with consumers, so I have sold about 700 pots. The remaining kale is expected to attract customers during the days before Tet," said Ms. Van.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Thien, Deputy Head of the Economic Department of Da Lat City, said that Ms. Luong Thi Yen Van is currently the Director of the Da Lat Home Garden Cooperative.
