Mr. Ho Van Can's family in Thoi Tan commune, Thoi Lai district takes care of summer-autumn rice.
Follow the fields
Summer-autumn rice crops in the city are growing and developing quite well. Farmers in many places are confident that this rice crop will have high yields and are currently continuing to closely monitor their fields to proactively care for and protect the rice.
Mr. Le Van Hai, residing in Dong Thanh hamlet, Dong Thuan commune, Thoi Lai district, said: "This summer-autumn crop, all 10 hectares of my land are planted with high-quality rice variety OM5451. The rice is growing quite well and has entered the green stage, and in about 3 weeks it will be ready for harvest, with an expected yield of 900 kg of fresh rice per large hectare (1,300 m2 ). At the present stage, rice is very susceptible to yield reduction due to rain and wind causing lodging, as well as pests and especially rats biting and causing damage. To protect the rice, I visit the fields regularly to actively drain water, avoid lodging and flooding due to rain, and prevent pests on the rice. I also cut and collect all weedy rice that appears in the field so that the harvested rice is of good quality, can be sold at a high price and avoid the risk of weedy rice outbreaks in the following rice crops." According to Mr. Trinh Van Hanh in Thoi Tan commune, Thoi Lai district, his family's 3 hectares of OM 5451 rice seedling this summer-autumn crop are growing well, but he is not complacent and continues to visit the fields regularly to care for and protect the rice. Avoid the risk of rice being damaged by pests and adverse weather factors, especially recently there have been frequent heavy rains accompanied by strong winds that can affect the rice.
This year's summer-autumn rice crop faces many difficulties due to high prices of many input materials and unfavorable weather conditions due to the impact of climate change. However, summer-autumn rice production is also favorable thanks to the recent investment and development of irrigation infrastructure by the State, helping farmers proactively source irrigation water for production. Farmers are also provided with training and guidance by the Department of Agriculture to promote the application of mechanization and scientific and technical advances to reduce costs, reduce labor and improve production efficiency. With the active support of the Department of Agriculture, and the proactive participation of farmers in rice care and protection, in general, summer-autumn rice crops in the city have grown quite well, with few pests and diseases, promising high yields.
Farmers set rice selling price
In the 2025 summer-autumn crop, farmers in districts and towns in Can Tho City have planted rice on an area of 70,764 hectares, reaching 100.8% of the plan, 516 hectares lower than the same period last year. This crop, farmers in the city mainly choose to produce high-quality rice and fragrant rice to facilitate consumption. The rice varieties that farmers focus on producing include OM5451, OM18, OM380 and Dai Thom 8, IR50404 and some other rice varieties.
To ensure product output, this rice crop, farmers in many cooperatives and rice growing cooperatives in the city continue to cooperate with units and enterprises to implement large-scale field models and rice production models according to orders from units and enterprises. Households without contracts with enterprises have also proactively connected with traders to sell rice. At this time, although the summer-autumn rice crop in the city has not yet entered the harvest, many traders have asked to buy rice and many farmers have received deposits to fix the selling price of rice for traders. Currently, traders in many places give farmers deposits of 300,000-500,000 VND/cong to commit to buying fresh rice when the harvest begins. Mr. Nguyen Van Cu in Trang Tho B area, Trung Nhut ward, Thot Not district, said: "I have received a deposit of 500,000 VND/cong to negotiate the sale of 20 cong of summer-autumn rice seeded with OM5451 to a purchasing unit in the district, at a price of 6,000 VND/kg. It is expected that in 2 weeks my rice field will be ready for harvest. I have also cooperated with the purchasing unit and the combine harvester owner to plan the rice harvest date to ensure timely weighing and selling of fresh rice on the harvest day." Mr. Ho Van Can in Dong Hoa A hamlet, Thoi Tan commune, Thoi Lai district, said: "Recently, I received a deposit of 300,000 VND/cong to sell 4 cones of summer-autumn rice to traders, with the price of fresh OM5451 rice at 6,000 VND/kg, this price has increased by about 200 VND/kg compared to more than 2 weeks ago. However, the current rice price is still 1,500 VND/kg lower than the summer-autumn crop last year. After calculating the input production costs, if selling rice at 6,000 VND/kg, I can still make a profit of about 2 million VND/cong if the rice yield reaches 800kg/cong, so I decided to sell the rice so that I don't have to worry about finding an outlet when entering the market.
harvest".
Through actual surveys in many localities, it is shown that the prices of OM380, IR50404 and OM5441 rice varieties in this summer-autumn crop are agreed by farmers in many districts in Can Tho City to sell fresh rice to traders at 5,800-6,300 VND/kg, while OM18 and Dai Thom 8 rice varieties are at 6,400-6,600 VND/kg. In general, this year's summer-autumn rice is purchased by traders at a price not as high as last year due to the impact of lower export rice prices compared to last year. However, to ensure product output, many farmers have decided to close the rice selling price early instead of waiting until the harvest date.
Faced with the impact of climate change and the complicated rain and sunshine situation in recent times, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Can Tho City recommends that farmers visit their fields regularly to proactively care for and protect their rice. At present, farmers and local authorities need to pay attention to pests such as rats, brown planthoppers, whitefly, leaf rollers, grain smut, leaf blast, neck blast and leaf scorch. Currently, the early summer-autumn rice crops are about to be harvested, so it is also necessary to proactively contact and connect with harvesters and traders, rice purchasing enterprises to ensure timely harvest and consumption of rice, limiting losses.
