Due to the heavy rains in recent days, rice farmers in Tuy Phong district are busy harvesting the last rice crops of the late winter-spring season, drying them in preparation for the new planting season. Despite pest and disease problems, this year's yield and rice prices are quite high, making the farmers happy.
In Tuy Phong, despite being known as the sunniest and windiest region in the province, these days, sudden rain showers are still occurring during the transitional season. Therefore, the urgency of completing farming tasks is even more evident for local farmers.
Harvesters are operating at increased capacity in the fields to harvest the last rice crops of the season. On the main roads, a few trucks loaded with rice occasionally arrive at the yards of farmers. The rice drying areas are also crowded with people, the morning atmosphere becoming more bustling as they try to avoid rain affecting the quality of the rice. “Although it’s hard work, this year the yield and price of rice are quite high, so the farmers are very happy,” shared Ms. Hien, a farmer in Lien Huong town, after harvesting her family’s 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of late winter-spring rice with a yield of about 8 quintals per sao. Ms. Hien boasted: If there hadn’t been pests or diseases, the yield could have been even higher. Encouragingly, at this time, the price of fresh rice is 7,000 VND/kg and dried rice is 8,100 VND/kg, higher than in previous years, so the farmers are making a good profit.
Mr. Nhữ Quốc Thích – Head of the Agriculture and Rural Development Department of Tuy Phong District – also expressed his delight when we met him. The district's agricultural leader stated that due to insufficient irrigation water in the 2022 crop season, Tuy Phong district experienced delays in production, leading to a slow start to the winter-spring crop season. Accordingly, in the winter-spring season, the entire district planted 2,127 hectares, mainly with ML 48 and Đài Thơm 8 rice varieties. Harvesting is currently underway for the remaining areas, with an average yield of 6.5-7 tons/ha. For example, rice in the Phan Dũng lake area achieved approximately 5.5-6.5 tons/ha. The 120 hectares in the Đá Bạc lake area have already been harvested, with an average yield of 7.5 tons/ha, while the Vĩnh Hảo and Vĩnh Tân areas achieved a yield of 8 tons/ha. The reason for the high productivity in this area is due to crop diversification, a reliable water supply for irrigation, and the ever-improving experience and farming techniques of the local people.
According to local assessments, since the beginning of the year, crop production in general and rice production in particular in Tuy Phong district has been relatively favorable due to sufficient water supply from reservoirs. In addition, pest and disease outbreaks have been negligible, and yields and production have met or exceeded targets. Alongside the urgent harvesting of late-season winter-spring rice crops, the Tuy Phong district agricultural sector reports that farmers are actively preparing for the 2023 summer-autumn crop. To date, over 144 hectares have been planted in the Phan Dung and Hoa Minh reservoir areas.
Notably, along with Tuy Phong district, other localities in the province are also urgently planting the summer-autumn crop according to the province's general planting schedule from April 5th to June 15th, 2023. The provincial agricultural sector advises localities to closely monitor weather conditions and water resources to develop production plans and arrange planting schedules appropriately for each region and locality. They also guide farmers in preparing the necessary conditions regarding seeds and land to ensure a proactive approach to summer-autumn crop production. Farmers are recommended to use certified rice seeds for planting to increase yield and product quality.
