Nguyen Thu Hong ( Thanh Hoa ) is currently a second-year student at the University of Foreign Languages. Different from her feminine appearance, Hong pursues a rather edgy and individualistic Rap music genre. At the age of 20, the female Gen Z student dreams of stirring up Vietnamese Rap like the young rapper Tage did.
A day for female student Nguyen Thu Hong begins with classes at 8am. Since leaving her family to study in Hanoi , the young girl has become accustomed to taking care of herself.
Although she spends a lot of time on her passion for music , Hong still tries to balance it with her studies at school. Hong's major is English Pedagogy and her foreign language achievements are also quite outstanding (8.0 IELTS). There was a time when Hong worked part-time as a tutor to earn extra income to support her desire to pursue music .
Whenever they have free time from school, Hong and her friends often go to coffee shops to work on music projects.
“I was introduced to hip-hop culture when I was in middle school, but it wasn’t until college that I really had the time to pursue my passion,” Hong said. “I spent time studying music theory and learning other essential skills. Thanks to the money I earned from making music, I had a small amount of money to support my reproduction.”
Soundcloud is an online music platform where Hong posts her "brainchildren" and indulges her passion for music.
Most of Hong's songs are handwritten in English because she feels it is easier to convey her emotions and this is also a way for her to improve her foreign language. Sharing about the artist role model she pursues, Hong said: "I quite admire Tage because of his meticulous and serious artistic style. In addition, I also want to learn more about Tage's music composition as well as his efforts to always renew himself."
Despite her young age, the Gen Z female student often receives invitations to attend music shows as a guest. She quickly prepares to appear with the most confidence.
It took about half an hour to travel to the performance venue on a street in Hoan Kiem district (Hanoi). Hong was eager to enjoy the vibrant mixes and meet friends who shared the same "frequency".
Currently, she is a member of an underground music production group called Ao Anh Life. She also participates as a producer in a newly formed band. In addition to her passion for creating beats, Hong is also learning to write lyrics so that she can become an RnB singer.
“Getting used to the operations on the machine is not difficult, but actually creating a quality beat that matches the “vibe” of the song is the problem. There are simple beats that I can do in about 15 minutes. But with complex beats, I have to spend hours connecting the “hook” (chorus), “verse” (lyrics) and “bridge” (transition) parts smoothly or adding “instruments” (instruments, such as drums, piano...) according to the character's request," Hong shared.
Hong doesn't remember exactly how many tournaments she has participated in, but each competition is an opportunity for her to train herself as well as fulfill her dream of stirring up Rap Viet.
