Vu Thu Hang, born in 2004, is currently a third-year student majoring in Chinese Pedagogy at Shanghai University (China). The Dao girl, from Tuyen Quang , said that winning a ticket to her dream school was a long and arduous journey.

The biggest inspiration that helps Hang to constantly strive is her parents. Both of them work in the medical field. Since childhood, Hang has been familiar with the image of her parents devotedly taking care of the sick, regardless of the time. “That image has instilled in me a clear awareness that I must live a decent life, strive to study to develop myself and help others,” Hang said.

In 11th grade, Hang learned about the Shanghai City Scholarship. Passionate about Chinese, the student at Tuyen Quang High School for the Gifted decided to self-study the language through books, podcasts and online materials.

Hang also set goals, researched scholarship requirements, asked for letters of recommendation, took the necessary certification exams, and was determined to study abroad on her own. That process was also during the Covid-19 outbreak, making it difficult for Hang to prepare her application.

“There were times when I thought I couldn’t achieve this goal,” Hang recalls. But every time she thought about giving up, Hang remembered the motivation that made her want to step out of her comfort zone.

With discipline and clear direction, in 2022, Hang won a full scholarship from Shanghai city and spent a year studying the preparatory program at Shanghai Normal University.

In the same year, Hang received a certificate of merit from the Minister and Chairman of the Ethnic Committee for her outstanding achievements in study and training.

The Dao girl only applied to one dream school, which was suitable for her development orientation, Shanghai University. By winning a full scholarship from the Confucius Institute - one of the scholarships with a strict selection process, reviewed every year based on scores and learning attitude, Hang reduced her worries about tuition fees and also received a subsidy of about 2,500 yuan/month.

“At that time, I was so happy I cried,” Hang said.

However, in the beginning of her time in China, Hang also experienced “culture shock”. Although Hang had a foundation in Chinese, communicating with native speakers who spoke at a fast pace and with many dialects took her a long time to get used to.

To adapt, the female student set clear discipline and learning goals for each stage. In the first year, Hang focused on strengthening her language foundation and learning methods. In the second year, she promoted research, participated in academic activities and began developing scientific topics. In the third year, Hang spent a lot of time on her thesis, practical projects and continued her master's degree.

Along with studying, Hang also takes on an online Chinese tutoring job to gain teaching experience. “The busy schedule sometimes makes me tired, but what keeps me going is my long-term goal and the desire to step out into the world ,” Hang said.

When she went to China, Hang realized that technology and knowledge could quickly shorten the regional gap. From then on, Hang began to focus on researching issues related to her homeland, especially poverty reduction and youth development.

In 2023, she conducted a study comparing poverty reduction policies and their impact on economic development in China and Vietnam. Growing up in a region with many limitations, Hang understood the value of these policies for the mountainous region. Her topic was later positively evaluated for its high practicality.

In 2025, Shanghai University selected and supported Hang to expand this research direction. The female student continued with the scientific topic of digital transformation in rural poverty reduction. This research aims to apply digital technology and Chinese experience to design a model to help Vietnamese students participate in poverty reduction work - making a practical contribution to the development of the homeland. Hang's topic won second prize at the 8th Shanghai University Student Academic Forum.

As a Dao student studying in China, Hang said she always felt very clearly that she was not studying just for herself. “That thought pushed me to study seriously, live responsibly, and not give up when facing difficulties,” Hang said.

She hopes to continue her master's studies and develop her research, becoming a university lecturer. More importantly, Hang wants her research topics to be implemented in Vietnam, contributing to improving policies, supporting socio-economic development and creating practical values for ethnic minority communities.

“I think ethnic minorities should not limit themselves. I believe that the starting point does not determine the destination. Every small step brings us closer to our dreams,” Hang said.
