The clip above was shared online not long ago and has had nearly 10 million views and millions of comments. Over the past two days, the online community has continued to spread and discuss the short clip sharing the living expenses of a female student following a "minimalist lifestyle" named Thu.
Female student follows minimalist lifestyle, still spends 25 million VND/month
In this 1 minute 30 second clip, a female student named Thu shared: "Because I don't have a house in Saigon, I have to spend 5 million VND per month on rent (including electricity and water). The apartment I'm living in has 2 bedrooms, rent for 8.5 million VND, I live with a friend so the cost is split in half.
The cost of food, coffee, and gas for transportation is about 4.5 million VND/month. The good thing is that since I rented a new house, I don't need to go to the cafe to meet deadlines anymore, so I can save a little bit.
A four-month course costs about 20 million VND, divided into about 5 million VND per month. I also learn other skills, so the tuition is about 7 million VND/month.
I am a person who rarely goes shopping or buys cosmetics. I am also pursuing a minimalist lifestyle but I have to spend 2 million VND on shopping because my job is quite image-related. Another expense is makeup for events, about 2 million VND/month.
Every month, Thu has to spend 4.5 million VND on gym fees... 500,000 VND/month for hair care. Total health care expenses are 5 million VND/month. In total, Thu has to spend about 25 million VND/month.
Because of the nature of the job and many other factors, the cost is a bit higher than that of a student. Actually, about 6-7 million VND is enough for a student."
"Share your real experiences"
On the afternoon of March 23, Tuoi Tre Online reporter met the female student in this clip at a recording studio in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, when she was busy taking photos and recording videos.
This female student introduced herself as Le Thi Minh Thu, from Ham Thuan Nam, Binh Thuan province. She is currently a second-year student majoring in multimedia communications at a private university in Binh Thanh district, Ho Chi Minh City.
"Outside of school hours, I also do many other jobs such as content creation, affiliate (affiliate marketing is a form of marketing to introduce products and services to suppliers - PV), photo model and actor. Participate in acting for several student projects," Thu said.
Thu added: "I am a person who likes taking photos and recording clips. At first, I just wanted to share about my life and studies on social networks, but accidentally it was well received by many people. Therefore, what I share on social networks are my real experiences."
The female student affirmed that she does not spend lavishly but spends very frugally and in accordance with her ability to earn extra income to support her studies - Photo: TRAN HUYNH
"My expenses are all reasonable, I don't spend lavishly"
Sharing more about the clip "How much money do students spend per month?" that is causing a stir on social networks, Thu confirmed that the content in the clip is true. "Before, I used to rent a serviced apartment, an apartment with many people living there with a lower rental cost. But due to the nature of my job, I need a large space and a lot of things, so I have to rent an apartment in Thu Duc City with a friend," Thu said.
According to Thu, the amount of money she spends depends on the amount of money she earns each month. Thanks to her "running around" and earning enough, Thu can usually afford to pay for her living expenses. In the months when she earns a lot of money, she doesn't ask her family for money. But in difficult times, she has to call her parents to ask for money.
"For a student, about 6-7 million VND is enough to live in Saigon. Compared to other students, my spending level is a bit higher. The important thing is that my expenses are reasonable, not wasteful. I always calculate the possibility of recouping my expenses.
My spending depends on whether I have work that day or not. On days when I have events to attend, I spend a lot on clothes, makeup, etc. I also pay a salary to a friend who supports me with my work.
I don't shop or spend lavishly, but spend very frugally and in accordance with my ability to earn extra income to support my studies. Minimalism here does not mean limiting shopping, but spending appropriately and reasonably. Most of the things I shop and spend on support my work and studies, nothing is redundant," Thu affirmed.
In response to concerns that part-time jobs will affect students’ studies, Thu said that if students want to work to earn extra income to cover their living expenses, they need to choose smart jobs. That is, choose a job that is suitable for their studies and learn right from that job.
"Currently, I mainly do affiliate, this is a new form of making money online, convenient, bringing quick results suitable for many young people. The things I am doing, I do not focus too much on income but mainly do it in the spirit of exploring , learning to take advantage of my youth. My academic results are quite good. Two years ago, I took the IELTS test and got 6.0, now I try to save money to learn more English", Thu added.
