Fake bird's nest drinks are rampant, businesses worry about 'losing at home'

Sharing at the conference, in addition to export issues, Ms. Ly Hua Thi Lan Phuong - Member of the Vietnam Bird's Nest Association - informed that currently, the output of foreign bird's nest imported into Vietnam is more than the amount of domestically produced bird's nest, while the price of bird's nest is falling a lot compared to before. The fact that foreign bird's nest is imported into Vietnam but is not strictly controlled by standards and technical barriers, many people are using poor quality bird's nest.

On TikTok Shop, bird's nest has almost become a 'national product' - always in the Top 10 best-selling products. It is worth mentioning that anyone, even individuals without a business registration, can sell this product. But how much, where does it come from, what is the quality - who controls it?

Sharing the same opinion, Mr. Phan Viet Hung - representative of Vietnam Bird's Nest Company ( Ninh Thuan ) - said that currently on the market there are many poor quality bird's nest products, fake and counterfeit goods.

Many people sell bird's nest products on TikTok, while no one checks or controls the origin or quality, so many people "lose money and suffer" when buying fake products.

Recently, a number of cases related to false advertising and the sale of fake and poor quality products on social media platforms have been exposed. Therefore, businesses in the bird's nest industry also believe that authorities need to intervene and check the quality of bird's nests sold on social platforms.

Raising consumer awareness of people

Regarding the issue of fake bird's nest, previously, at the end of November 2024, the General Department of Market Management (now the Department of Domestic Market Management and Development) - Ministry of Industry and Trade opened a showroom with the theme "Understanding genuine goods - Avoiding counterfeit goods", including distinguishing between real and fake bird's nest at 62 Trang Tien, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Thang - Director of the Northern Branch of Khanh Hoa Salanganes Nest Company - reported that recently, the authorities have discovered many counterfeit products of the Khanh Hoa Salanganes Nest brand. The QR code of the counterfeit products will not show any information, the packaging shows the production location but when the authorities come to check, it is only the processing location.

Notably, counterfeiters mass produce and only label brands when selling to the market to avoid heavy penalties from authorities. Not to mention, counterfeit bird's nest products advertise bird's nest content of up to 70%, while in reality, testing shows only 0.01%. This is a very painful situation.

In addition to the problem of fake, counterfeit, and poor quality bird's nests that are causing significant damage to bird's nest businesses, delegates also mentioned many obstacles to the development of the bird's nest industry such as the lack of clarity in legal regulations on licensing the construction of bird's nest houses, the majority of bird's nest houses nationwide have not been officially licensed, and obstacles related to traceability and animal quarantine of bird's nest products...

Besides, there are solutions to build a national brand for Vietnamese bird's nest, perfect the legal framework, apply modern science and technology to develop the bird's nest industry...

Affirming that the bird's nest farming industry has great potential, advantages and value, Mr. Duong Tat Thang - Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) - said that along with the export market, the domestic market also has great potential for Vietnamese bird's nest businesses.

In the coming time, the Department will develop a traceability system and plan farming areas, thereby improving product quality. In addition to overcoming difficulties, businesses need to take advantage of their strengths, increase deep processing, compete fairly, and aim to build a national brand.

According to experts, along with organizing production, authorities need to strengthen the organization of showrooms with the theme "Understanding Genuine Goods - Avoiding Fake Goods". Displaying products with real - fake verification not only helps consumers easily compare and identify, but also equips them with the necessary knowledge to choose safe, quality products, avoiding falling into the trap of fake and poor quality goods.

"According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in 2024, the country had 29,320 bird's nest houses, of which Kien Giang, Khanh Hoa and Dak Lak were the localities with the fastest growth rates. Bird's nest output in 2024 is estimated at 270 tons, an increase of 8% compared to 2023. According to the Livestock Development Strategy to 2030, the bird's nest industry aims to increase output to 350 - 400 tons per year."
