Yen Bai - In recent years, grasping the market demand in searching and consuming products from livestock and specialty animals, many households in Hung Thinh commune, Tran Yen district have invested in developing a model of raising specialty animals to develop the economy and increase income.
The family of Mr. Nguyen Thuyet Tung in Yen Thanh village, Hung Thinh commune, Tran Yen district is one of the households implementing the Mong pig farming model and currently his herd has 4 sows and 7 pigs.
With the support of Resolution No. 69 of the Provincial People's Council, in 2021, Mr. Tung started implementing a model of raising native Mong pigs imported from Mu Cang Chai district.
Taking advantage of the garden land, he invested in building barns for raising pigs. Taking care of native black pigs is quite simple, mainly taking advantage of locally available foods such as sweet potato leaves, banana trees, cassava, corn, and rice bran. Regarding diseases, native black pigs are less susceptible to diseases than regular white pigs and can be raised for about 8-10 months before being sold; the price of black pigs is always stable at 100,000 VND/kg or more.
Mr. Tung shared: "Because there are not many workers, my family only raises local pigs in moderate numbers. Pig feed is not demanding, pigs are rarely affected by diseases, and we sell everything we raise. The selling price is always stable, and raising pigs has contributed to increasing the family's income."
After visiting the bamboo rat farms with high economic efficiency in Van Chan district, Mr. Dinh Xuan Linh in Yen Thanh village cherished the idea of starting a business by bringing bamboo rats to raise locally. After researching and learning from experience, in 2020 he decided to buy 30 bamboo rat breeds for 12 million VND.
Seeing that they are easy to raise, easy to care for, and do not require much space for cages, Mr. Linh multiplied the herd and gradually expanded the scale of development to over 100 rats. Rats are very easy to raise, they mainly eat at night and sleep during the day, and their food is also very easy to find, such as bamboo, sugarcane, corn, vegetables, tubers, fruits, etc.
Baby bamboo rats raised for about 3 months will reach a weight of about 0.5 kg and can be sold for breeding. As for commercial bamboo rats raised for 7 months, reaching a weight of 1 kg or more, they can be sold.
Currently, Mr. Linh's farm can supply breeding bamboo rats, priced at about 600,000 - 800,000 VND/pair; meat bamboo rats cost from 450,000 - 500,000 VND/kg. In 2022, after deducting expenses, Mr. Linh's bamboo rat farming model will earn a profit of nearly 100 million VND.
Mr. Linh said: "Compared to other livestock, raising bamboo rats requires investment in barns, few breeds, short raising time, diverse food sources, few diseases, wide consumer market but high cost. Therefore, I continue to invest in more barns to multiply the herd."
Currently, in Hung Thinh commune, there have appeared dozens of models of raising specialty livestock such as: Mong chicken, native black pig, goat, bamboo rat, deer, soft-shell turtle... According to the assessment of the livestock households, the native specialty livestock has good resistance, is not picky about food, is easy to raise, and adapts easily to many living conditions. The development of raising specialty livestock brings economic value many times higher than other types of livestock.
However, if the model of raising specialty animals is developed spontaneously, without any connection to the product consumption market, the economic efficiency will not be high; even, it will result in losses. Therefore, in recent years, along with the development of herd size, most livestock households have focused on linking and finding stable consumption markets for specialty livestock products.
In addition, the commune government has coordinated with relevant agencies to select and support local people in specialty livestock breeds, develop large-scale livestock farming, and aim to turn these livestock products into key local specialties.
Mr. Le Anh Tuan - Chairman of Hung Thinh Commune People's Committee affirmed: To increase sustainable income for people, the Party Committee and the Commune People's Committee have developed specialized resolutions and plans on restructuring crops and livestock. Up to now, the commune has formed a concentrated fruit tree area and the commune is planning an area for growing Bat Do bamboo.
In particular, in recent years, people have boldly invested in building models of raising specialty animals such as goats, bamboo rats, chickens, black pigs, deer, soft-shell turtles, etc., bringing in high incomes and an average profit of over a hundred million VND per model each year. Currently, the commune is continuing to coordinate with functional agencies to support science , technology, and capital for households raising specialty animals.
The replication and development of indigenous specialty livestock models such as black pigs, Mong chickens, bamboo rats, goats, deer, soft-shelled turtles, etc. has changed people's awareness of raising livestock in a biosafety direction to enhance economic value and increase income.
At the same time, it is also the basis for building a brand for specialty livestock farming, contributing to shifting the livestock structure, bringing higher economic efficiency to farmers.
