"Dare" to raise rare birds of wild origin

Pheasants, including red pheasants listed in the Vietnam Red Book, are one of the wild birds, commonly domesticated and raised for meat and eggs like common poultry.

To raise as pets, people often choose the 7-color pheasant breed, known as the most beautiful bird in the world . At the same time, it is also a breed of bird that is fascinated by bird hunters.

Owning this rare bird breed listed in the Red Book is extremely difficult but now it has become more popular. Not everyone dares to spend money to buy the breed to raise because the price is very expensive, each pair of breeding birds costs 5-6 million VND.

Mr. Hoang Van Thuong, in Kim Son village, Ky Bac commune, Ky Anh district (Ha Tinh province), said: "In 2018, on a trip to the North, I witnessed a very beautiful model of raising ornamental pheasants. Through research, pheasants are easy to raise, require little care, and bring high economic efficiency. After that, I decided to build a barn and buy 6 pairs of breeding birds for 30 million VND."

On an area of 100 square meters of garden land, Mr. Hoang Van Thuong made solid, adjacent cages, each cage is about 2 square meters wide, surrounded by B40 steel mesh.

The roof is covered with corrugated iron to prevent birds from flying out; inside the cage, wooden bars or horizontal tree branches are placed for birds to perch; the sand floor underneath absorbs water well to keep the cage clean, dry, and limit disease, without polluting the environment.

Mr. Hoang Van Thuong shared: "At first, because I had no experience in caring for pheasants, I was quite worried. But my son supported me in joining pheasant raising groups on social media channels and watching breeding models in many other localities. Gradually, I learned a lot of experience to apply to better care for the birds."

Currently, the pheasant farming model of Mr. Hoang Van Thuong, in Kim Son village, Ky Bac commune, Ky Anh district (Ha Tinh province) has increased from 6 initial breeding pairs to 200 birds and sold over 30 pairs for an income of hundreds of millions of dong. Photo: PV

"When purchased, pheasants are completely domesticated and raised in captivity. Once you have mastered the techniques, taking care of them is not too complicated, but they are also sensitive animals with low resistance. Therefore, in addition to choosing safe breeds, it is necessary to clean the barn, daily farming tools, and food. In particular, it is necessary to vaccinate fully," Mr. Thuong revealed.

Adult pheasants can have 5-7 birds in each cage (during the breeding period). To let the pheasants lay eggs, choose a beautiful, healthy male and pair 1 male with 3 females. Each female will lay 20-25 eggs within 3 months (from March to June).

Because pheasants do not know how to incubate, after researching, Mr. Thuong invested in a small industrial incubator, ensuring a stable heat source, helping the hatching rate reach nearly 70%.

"Expensive but worth it" bird breed

Knowing how to take care of them, the baby pheasants are born healthy, adapt well, and grow quickly. In 2020, Mr. Thuong bred 15 pairs and continued to expand the scale of the barn to 300 m2 by renovating the old chicken coop to raise this precious breed of pheasant.

Currently, the pheasant model has begun to bring stable income to Mr. Thuong's family when the chicks are born and well cared for, and the breeding birds begin to be sold.

According to Mr. Hoang Van Thuong, for pheasants to grow well, the barn needs to be airy, with dry straw and rice husks on the floor, and enough space for the birds to fly and jump. Photo: PV

Mr. Hoang Van Thuong said: "After hatching, chicks aged 1-3 months are sold for 1,600,000 VND/pair; chicks aged 4-7 months are sold for 2,200,000 VND/pair; adult pheasants (about 2 years old), weighing 1.5-2kg/head are sold for 6 million VND/pair.

Up to now, I have kept 200 birds (including 50 parent pairs). The pheasant farming model has sold over 30 pairs, after deducting expenses, the profit is about 100 million VND".

According to Mr. Thuong, raising pheasants requires low investment costs, the cage is easy to build, does not require much space, and does not take much time to care for. In addition to supplementing a little industrial food for young birds, these pheasants mainly eat available ingredients such as: crushed corn, rice, bran, water spinach, banana tree trunks...

On average, spend only 30 minutes each day to feed the pheasants twice a day, in the morning and evening. Clean the cage to ensure the birds grow healthily and have beautiful feathers.

"Since joining the pheasant farming model, I have broadened my horizons, learned many experiences and good practices through groups on Facebook. Through this channel, many customers across the country, such as in the provinces: Bac Ninh, Hanoi, Khanh Hoa, Quang Ngai.... have bought pheasants from our family.

Currently, there are not enough pheasant breeds to supply the market. In the coming time, I will continue to expand the scale to meet the demand for commercial pheasants, increasing the number of parent birds to provide breeds," said Mr. Thuong.

Talking to PV Dan Viet, Mr. Phan Chi Nguyen - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ky Bac commune, said: "The pheasant breed was experimentally raised by the household of Hoang Van Thuong. Through monitoring and evaluation, this is a new model but has high economic efficiency. In particular, it limits pollution of the rural environment, does not cost much, does not require much care, and is suitable for the development of household economy".

"In the coming time, we will continue to monitor, evaluate, and promote people to visit and learn from Mr. Hoang Van Thuong's pheasant farming model. Through this, we will expand the pheasant farming model to develop the economy and increase the income of local people," said Mr. Phan Chi Nguyen - Vice Chairman of Ky Bac Commune People's Committee.
