This move demonstrates the chip giant's determination to expand its influence into the open-source technology sector.
Expand "coverage" beyond hardware.
Although Nvidia's reputation is tied to its ultra-fast chips and proprietary CUDA software platform – the "weapon" that has helped it dominate the AI industry – the company is undergoing significant transformations.
Nvidia is not just focusing on hardware; it is actively providing open-source AI models, from physics simulations to self-driving cars, serving the global research and business community.
The acquisition of SchedMD is the latest piece in this strategy. SchedMD is the creator of Slurm, an open-source technology for scheduling massive computational tasks.
This is a crucial factor in optimizing server capacity at data centers.
"Slurm, when combined with Nvidia's latest hardware, serves as a critical infrastructure for generative AI. This tool helps AI developers and builders manage training and model inference needs most efficiently," Nvidia emphasized in a blog post.
Commitment to the open-source community
One notable aspect of this deal is Nvidia's commitment. Despite owning SchedMD, Nvidia has stated that it will continue to distribute Slrum software as open source.
This means developers will still have free access, while Nvidia will provide comprehensive technical support and maintenance services.
The deal took place shortly after Nvidia announced its new generation of open-source AI models on the morning of December 15th.
These models, touted as "faster, cheaper, and smarter," are seen as a direct response to the fierce competition from open-source models developed by AI labs in China.
Positive news about the deal and new products immediately pushed Nvidia's stock up 1.35%.
SchedMD was founded in 2010 by Morris "Moe" Jette and Danny Auble in Livermore, California; the company currently has approximately 40 employees.
However, their influence is considerable, with a client list including CoreWeave, a cloud infrastructure company, and the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre.
The detailed financial terms of the agreement have not yet been disclosed.
