“As I told you, we’re not trying to decouple from China. What we’re trying to do is change the relationship for the better,” President Joe Biden said at a press conference on November 14.
Asked how he would define success in his upcoming summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Biden said it would mean the two sides normalizing bilateral communication.
“Going back to normal communication, being able to pick up the phone and talk to each other in a crisis, being able to make sure that our militaries are still communicating with each other,” Biden added.
However, Mr. Biden also expressed his stance regarding China's trade practices.
"I will no longer support the notion that if we want to invest in China, we have to hand over all of our trade secrets," Biden stressed.
The US leader's statement came as President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet on the sidelines of the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit on November 15 in San Francisco.
US officials said Mr Biden and Mr Xi are expected to discuss a range of issues, including bilateral relations, North Korea, Taiwan, the war between Israel and Hamas and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
This will be the second face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since Mr. Biden was elected US President, and President Xi Jinping's first visit to the US since 2017.
