Hunter Biden pleads not guilty in California

Hunter Biden entered a not guilty plea in federal court in California on January 11, CNN reported.

Hunter Biden has been charged with nine counts of tax evasion that prosecutors say he carried out over several years to support a lavish lifestyle. Hunter Biden's lawyers have argued that the charges are politically motivated.

Mr. Hunter Biden appeared at the US Congress headquarters on January 10.

The charges against Hunter Biden stem from a years-long investigation by David Weiss, who was appointed special counsel by US Attorney General Merrick Garland in August 2023.

After Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty, Judge Mark Scarsi, who oversees the case in California, set a trial date and deadlines for filing and hearing the case. Hunter Biden’s trial is scheduled for June 20.

Hunter Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell did not object to the judge’s date. The next hearing in the California case is set for late March.

According to the indictment filed in California, where Hunter Biden lives, President Biden's son "engaged in a four-year scheme to not pay at least $1.4 million in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for the years 2016 through 2019."

Prosecutors also allege that Hunter Biden misrepresented some expenses, including payments for an escort, as tax deductions. The US Justice Department has previously said that if convicted of tax evasion, Hunter Biden could face a maximum sentence of 17 years in prison, The Guardian reported.

Hunter Biden did not speak to reporters waiting outside the courthouse after the hearing. His lawyer has previously said his client has paid back the taxes.

Hunter Biden is also facing another case in Delaware. President Biden's son has been charged with illegally possessing a revolver, and he has also pleaded not guilty.
