Mr. Le Huu Hoang - Permanent Vice Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee: Unexpected inspection on anti-IUU fishing in Ninh Hoa town and Van Ninh district

On the afternoon of October 2, Mr. Le Huu Hoang - Standing Vice Chairman of Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee made a surprise inspection of the actual monitoring of the anchoring positions of fishing vessels that are not qualified to go to sea for exploitation, with a high risk of violating the provisions of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, anchored at Hon Khoi port (Ninh Hoa town) and Dai Lanh fishing port (Van Ninh district). Accompanying the delegation were leaders of a number of provincial departments and branches, leaders of Ninh Hoa town and Van Ninh district.

Mr. Le Huu Hoang encouraged fishermen of Ninh Thuy ward (Ninh Hoa town) to strictly implement regulations on combating IUU fishing.

Accordingly, Mr. Le Huu Hoang made a surprise inspection of the anchorage of a number of fishing vessels with a length of 15m or more that had not installed equipment, had stopped connecting to the vessel monitoring equipment... in the wards of Ninh Thuy, Ninh Hai (Ninh Hoa town) and Dai Lanh commune (Van Ninh district). Mr. Le Huu Hoang emphasized that the work of combating IUU fishing is first and foremost for the benefit of the fishing community, because recently, the European Commission's "Yellow Card" warning for seafood exported from Vietnam has greatly affected the income and life of fishermen. Mr. Le Huu Hoang requested that fishermen in localities strictly comply with the provisions of the Fisheries Law; absolutely do not violate IUU, especially do not violate foreign waters during fishing at sea.

At the inspection sites, the leaders of Ninh Hoa town and Van Ninh district also reported specifically to the provincial leaders on the direction and management work; the results achieved as well as the shortcomings and difficulties of the localities in the fight against IUU fishing; the key tasks that the two localities focused on implementing to contribute to removing the IUU "Yellow Card" warning of the European Commission (EC); developing sustainable and responsible fisheries in their localities. Mr. Le Huu Hoang emphasized the role and responsibility of the heads of local Party committees and authorities to resolutely direct and implement strong measures against IUU fishing in their localities. He also noted that both localities must do a good job of managing the fleet, especially for fishing vessels that are not qualified to go to sea for fishing and are at high risk of violating IUU. The leaders of the two localities must conduct surprise inspections of their coastal localities to firmly grasp the anchorage locations of ships at risk of IUU violations, and resolutely not allow unqualified ships to set sail...
