Effectiveness of the free-range chicken chain
Over the past period, the Vien Dong Agricultural and Commercial Service Cooperative ( Phu Yen village, Tam Dan commune, Phu Ninh district) has operated stably, generating considerable income for farmers through its model of linking and creating a chain of free-range chicken products. In 2023, the cooperative established a linkage chain with 13 households in Phu Ninh district, forming a specialized free-range chicken farming area.
By June 2025, starting with 143,000 initial breeding chickens, the cooperative had successfully raised six batches, harvesting over 190,000 tons of chicken meat, achieving a revenue of over 15.2 billion VND and a profit of 2.6 billion VND. In addition, the cooperative also collaborates in raising and selling native chickens and other local breeds, with an average annual sales volume of over 40,000 birds.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh from Phu Yen village, who participates in the free-range chicken farming supply chain with Vien Dong Agricultural and Commercial Service Cooperative, said that the cooperative has established a strict free-range chicken farming process. Besides investing in facilities that meet requirements, he also focuses on environmental protection, using biological products, and avoiding antibiotics to ensure that the commercial free-range chickens meet quality and food safety standards as required by the market.
After each three-month chicken farming cycle, he supplies 11,000 free-range chickens to the cooperative, weighing over 14 tons and earning nearly 60 million VND in profit. Mr. Thanh raises free-range chickens safely from disease, thus minimizing risks. Income from free-range chicken farming within the supply chain is higher than other farming and livestock models.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Vien, Director of Vien Dong Agricultural and Commercial Service Cooperative, said that through market monitoring, the cooperative has noticed that consumers are increasingly inclined to use safe food. Therefore, the cooperative chose to raise free-range chickens, bringing breeding stock from the Southwestern region to raise in the Phu Ninh area. To date, the cooperative has expanded its farming scale in a chain by linking with farmers in the province and some areas of Quang Ngai and Quang Binh .
“During the process of raising free-range chickens in a chain, we received capital support from the Phu Ninh District People's Committee and support for building VietGAP-certified chicken farming from the Livestock and Veterinary Sub-Department (Department of Agriculture and Environment). The initial success is thanks to the systematic and sustainable farming methods of the farmers and the acceptance of the market inside and outside the province,” said Ms. Vien.
Market connection
According to Mr. Dang Van Tinh, Head of the Planning and Inspection Department (Quang Nam Cooperative Union), many cooperatives in the province have now established production and business linkage chains.

For example, Binh Dao Agricultural Cooperative and Binh Nam Agricultural and Service Cooperative (both in Thang Binh district) have linked with businesses and farmers to create value chains for black sesame, rice seeds, lotus, peanuts, etc., yielding high economic value.
Duy Oanh Green Agriculture Cooperative (Duy Xuyen) has partnered with farmers in areas with abundant raw materials of black beans and green beans, purchasing and processing them to create Duy Oanh brown rice and seaweed bars, and Duy Oanh cereal powder, which have been well received by the market...
According to Mr. Dang Van Tinh, the initial success of agricultural production linkage chains in the province is highlighted by two points: cooperatives linking with farmers for efficient production, and cooperatives connecting supply and demand, facilitating trade to expand consumer markets.
In addition, many cooperatives in Quang Nam also export their goods. For example, Best One Cooperative (An Phu Ward, Tam Ky City) exports noni products from its partnerships with farmers to China; and the Cordyceps Mushroom Cooperative (Tam Phu Commune, Tam Ky City) exports its products to Thailand.
Currently, cooperatives in Quang Nam are very interested in trade promotion, participating in networking programs organized by the Cooperative Union, the industry and trade sector, and the province's startup program. Through these programs, products from the cooperative's supply chain with farmers are widely promoted.
Mr. Le Ngoc Trung, Chairman of the Quang Nam Cooperative Alliance, stated: "Linking production along the value chain and connecting goods to the market will create momentum for the transformation of the agricultural economy, rural areas, and socio-economic development in the province."
According to statistics, the province has 463 cooperatives. These cooperatives proactively register and effectively promote their product brands in the market to maintain and expand their market share, combat unfair competition among businesses; and invest in and implement diverse linkages with other economic sectors to maximize potential and create sustainable development.
