However, on Friday morning, Mr. Trump shared a video on the Truth Social platform claiming that the drop was intentional. The video opens with the caption: "Trump is crashing the stock market... but he's doing it on purpose."

Trump said he intended to inflame the stock market and decided on tax levels.

The video shared by Mr Trump, originally from TikTok user @wnnsa11 and reposted on X by the account “AmericanPapaBear”, claims that Mr Trump is playing a “secret move” that will “make you rich”.

The stock market crash would push money into Treasury bonds, forcing the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates in May, helping refinance trillions of dollars of debt at lower costs, according to the video.

Additionally, the video argues that tariffs would force companies to build factories in the US to avoid taxes and encourage farmers to sell their products domestically, helping to lower food prices.

Asked about the market plunge on Thursday, President Trump told reporters: "I think things are going very well. We have six or seven trillion dollars pouring into the country and we've never seen anything like it."

Meanwhile, President Trump is also said to have personally decided on the formula used to impose new tariffs on 185 countries this week, according to a report by The Washington Post.

Economists have largely criticized the tariffs, arguing they are economically harmful and predicting that median US household income will fall by $3,789 and GDP will fall by 0.87% by 2025.
