According to Mr. Trump’s post on the social network Truth Social on July 6, local time, countries will start receiving tax notices from the US starting today. Agreements between Washington and many countries will also be sent this time.

"I am pleased to announce that US tariff letters and/or agreements with many countries around the world will be sent starting at 12 noon on Monday, July 7 (11pm Vietnam time)," the US leader wrote.

Speaking to reporters the same day, Mr Trump said the tariffs were “probably 12, maybe 15 (percent)”. “And we’ve also made a deal, so we’ll have a combination of letters and some of the deals that have been done,” he said.

With the previously announced 90-day tariff pause set to end on July 9, reporters asked Trump whether the new tariffs would take effect this week or on August 1, as US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said.

"No, it's going to be tariffs, tariffs, it's going to be tariffs, tariffs... I think we'll be done with most countries by July 9, right. Either a letter or a deal," the Guardian quoted Mr. Trump as saying.

Last weekend, Mr. Trump said he had signed letters to 12 countries, outlining tariffs on goods exported to the United States, with the new tariffs potentially reaching 70%.

However, he refused to name the 12 countries, only saying that official information would be announced on July 7. Previously, Mr. Trump told reporters that the first batch of letters would be sent on July 4, coinciding with the US Independence Day, but the time was later adjusted.

In a statement on July 6, Mr. Bessent said that from August 1, countries that do not reach a trade agreement with Washington will be subject to the reciprocal tariffs that Mr. Trump announced in April 2025. This means that countries will have an additional 3 weeks.

Speaking on CNN, the US Treasury Secretary said he hoped for more major deals in the coming days, noting that negotiations with the European Union were going well.

"President Trump is going to send a letter to some of our trading partners saying if you don't move things along, on August 1st you're going to go back to the April 2nd tariffs. So I think we're going to see a lot of deals very quickly," Bessent said.
