During his election campaign, US President Donald Trump repeatedly affirmed that he would end the war in Ukraine before he took office.
In a segment of the “Full Measure” interview aired on March 15, Trump was asked about his campaign pledge to resolve the conflict in Ukraine within 24 hours. “Well, I was joking when I said that. I really mean it, I want to resolve it, and I think I’m going to be successful,” Trump said.
According to AP, this is a rare admission from Mr. Trump. During the election campaign, Mr. Trump confidently asserted that he could soon contact Russian and Ukrainian officials so that the two sides could sit down and negotiate an end to the conflict.

In the same interview, Mr. Trump was asked what he would do if Russian President Vladimir Putin did not agree to a ceasefire. “It would be bad news for the world because there are so many people dying. But I think he would agree. I think I know him pretty well,” the US President replied.
The prospect of a ceasefire in Ukraine has shown signs of optimism in recent days after Mr. Putin expressed support for peace proposals. However, the Russian leader also set conditions for Ukraine and the West.
In another development, on March 15, Mr. Trump announced the appointment of Mr. Joseph Keith Kellogg as special envoy to Ukraine. “As a military expert, Mr. Kellogg will work directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Ukrainian leadership. He knows them well and the two sides have a very good working relationship,” Mr. Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social.
