This move by Mr. Zelensky was made right after a meeting with Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, on the sidelines of debates on how to conduct the war with Russia that has lasted for the past 20 months.
“In a meeting with Defense Minister Rustem Umerov today, a number of priorities were set. There is not much time left to wait for good results. We need to act quickly to achieve changes in the near future,” Zelensky said in his evening video briefing.
Major General Tetiana Ostashchenko has been replaced as commander of the Medical Corps of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Mr. Zelensky said.
“The mission has become clear as has been repeatedly emphasized over time, especially in medical units on the battlefield, that we need to provide medical support to soldiers at a new level.”
According to him, these goals include a number of issues that need to be addressed - the need for more efficient hemostasis equipment, radical digitalization and better communication.
Mr. Umerov confirmed these changes on Telegram, and outlined the biggest priorities as digitalization, “tactical medicine” and troop rotation.
Ukrainian military reports on progress in retaking occupied areas in the east and south over the past week confirm that troops have taken control of areas on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Army, General Valery Zaluzhniy, said in an article published in early November that the war was entering a new phase of attrition and that Ukraine needed more advanced technology to counter the Russian army.
Despite repeatedly insisting that progress would take time, Mr Zelensky has rejected suggestions that the war is entering a stalemate and has called on Kyiv’s Western partners, primarily the US, to maintain the level of military aid.
Ms Ostashchenko has been replaced by Major General Anatoliy Kazmirchuk, director of a military clinic in Kyiv.
The dismissal of Ms Ostashchenko came a week after a Ukrainian news site reported that she and several others could be removed from their posts after interviewing several military medical staff and officials responsible for supporting the military.
