Palmer chatted with Mainoo as he left the field. |
In the 5th minute, Chelsea fell into a disadvantage when goalkeeper Robert Sanchez received a red card, before Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring for MU just a few minutes later. Coach Enzo Maresca was forced to take Palmer off the field in the 21st minute to replace him with Andrey Santos to patch up the defense system.
The 23-year-old midfielder was clearly upset, throwing something to the ground. But what got fans talking more was the moment he exchanged words with Kobbie Mainoo on the touchline. From the TV footage, many Chelsea fans confirmed that Palmer signaled to his England team-mate that he had a groin injury.
"I believe Palmer told Mainoo he had a groin injury, pointing to the area," one fan wrote on social media X. Another account also confirmed: "Palmer was putting ice on his groin, he must have left the pitch injured."
However, Palmer's reaction also made many Chelsea fans uncomfortable. One harsh comment: "Palmer smirking while talking to Mainoo was like a slap in the face to the fans who traveled to Old Trafford." Some viewers also thought that Palmer informed coach Maresca about the injury when passing through the technical area.
This is not the first time Palmer has missed out for similar reasons. Earlier this season, he withdrew during the warm-up against West Ham, then missed the Fulham game before returning after the England squad's September training camp.
