On May 5, an international and Libyan archaeological delegation announced the discovery of traces of an ancient lighthouse on the coast of the eastern city of Tobruk.
The discovery could redraw the map of ancient Mediterranean ports and contribute to historical understanding of Libya's maritime and cultural role in ancient civilizations.
According to a VNA correspondent in Africa, archaeologists have discovered parts of a round stone structure and a tower foundation indicating the presence of a tall building believed to have been used to guide ships to dock in this sea area.
The lighthouse is believed to date back to Greek or Roman times, a testament to the strategic importance of the site as a trading port in ancient times.
Archaeologists also found pottery fragments and figurines at the site, highlighting the level of commercial and cultural activity in the area and its cultural contact with its Mediterranean surroundings.
Excavations are still underway to analyze archaeological findings, as well as search for new artifacts at this site./.
