Artificial intelligence has become a powerful tool. Speaking at the Capital Framework for Large Banks conference on the expanding role of AI in healthcare, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman even confidently asserted that ChatGPT is better at diagnosing diseases than most doctors.
“ChatGPT can give you a better diagnosis. It can diagnose better than most doctors in the world ,” Altman said. While praising AI’s diagnostic capabilities, the CEO also made it clear that he is not advocating a completely AI-driven health care system.
“But people should still see a doctor. I really don’t want to entrust my health to ChatGPT without a human doctor involved,” the OpenAI co-founder added.
Technologies that can analyze massive amounts of data, at speeds beyond human capabilities, are enabling extraordinary advances in medicine.
From improving heart disease diagnosis to predicting protein structures to speed up drug discovery , machines are proving to be incredibly effective.
Even scholars and technology experts say that when used alongside humans to help assess, diagnose and treat patients, AI has shown positive results.
But the machines can also make mistakes and are sometimes deployed without adequate training or flexibility, putting patient care at risk, according to nurses and health care workers who regularly work with these technologies.
More troublingly, some clinicians told the WSJ they felt pressure from hospital administrators to delay the algorithm.
“AI should be used to support clinical decisions, not to replace experts like doctors. Hospital administrators need to understand that there are many things that an algorithm cannot see in a clinical setting,” said Kenrick Cato, a nursing professor at the University of Pennsylvania.
