The attraction of e-commerce
According to the report of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), Vietnam's e-commerce continues to maintain an impressive growth rate of 18-25% per year. In 2024, the market size will reach over 25 billion USD, an increase of 20% compared to 2023, accounting for about 9% of total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue nationwide. In 2024, e-commerce models in Vietnam will develop diversely; in which e-commerce trading floors will still occupy a prominent position, large e-commerce platforms such as Shopee, Lazada, Tiki and Sendo will continue to lead, occupying the majority of market share thanks to their ability to provide diverse products, competitive prices and fast shipping services. Or TikTok Shop has attracted millions of users thanks to its livestream shopping experience, creating a new wave in consumption.
This not only shows that consumers increasingly prefer online shopping methods but also affirms the attraction and development potential of e-commerce in the future. However, according to the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy , e-commerce still has many challenges, not only challenges in infrastructure and logistics systems but also the issue of consumer trust in product quality, after-sales service, personal information security, etc., which are also major barriers to the development of e-commerce.
Violations related to e-commerce that have occurred in recent times have made consumers more cautious in choosing purchasing methods. Notably, on April 24, the interdisciplinary inspection team on food safety assurance of Gia Lai province made a surprise inspection at the business household Pho Nui Shop (alley 420 Truong Chinh, Pleiku City), discovering violations: The storage area did not have enough shelves, food production without self-declaration of products according to the law (including 14 products). The inspection team drew up a record of administrative violations of food safety for the facility, recommended suspending the production of 14 products that had not self-declared products according to regulations and requested the facility to recall the products.
It is known that the Pho Nui Shop business has been operating since 2023. The facility produces and trades agricultural products from the Central Highlands and mainly sells them on social networking platforms such as Tik Tok, Facebook, etc. On average, each day, through live sessions on social networking platforms, this facility sells about 1,000 orders to consumers across the country. On the Tik Tok platform alone, the facility has sold nearly 650,000 products to the market.
Choose carefully
In fact, through the activities of purchasing goods on the e-commerce environment, product quality is always of concern to people. People really need the support of authorities, need to update information on goods, information on violations... to limit buying fake and poor quality goods. Ms. Nguyen Thu Trang (Ward 4, Tuy Hoa City) shared: For a long time, I have been used to online shopping. Due to frequent interactions via smartphone, information on goods and food comes continuously and I just conveniently place orders. During the purchases, I did not always receive the goods as expected, but many times I had to return them to the seller because the quality of the product was not as shown in the image or information introduced by the seller, especially through livestream sessions.
The Department of Industry and Trade recommends that consumers can protect themselves when shopping online by proactively improving their understanding of network information security, network security, choosing safe shopping platforms and shipping units, and when detecting signs of fraud, immediately reporting to the authorities for timely handling.
According to Mr. Nguyen Hai Trieu, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, the strong development of e-commerce brings many conveniences but also poses risks when product information is not strictly verified. Common risks that consumers encounter when shopping online are: Buying fake or counterfeit goods, because many businesses and individuals take advantage of the lack of transparency of the platforms to sell fake or poor quality goods, causing direct damage to consumers. Therefore, not only management agencies, but also businesses need to proactively improve their responsibility in protecting consumers.
According to Mr. Nguyen Hai Trieu, recently, the province's functional forces have discovered many cases of e-commerce businesses with signs of violations: Selling goods without invoices and documents, not complying with regulations on online business... Violations have also been made public in the media. "The Department of Industry and Trade recommends that consumers can protect themselves when shopping online by proactively improving their understanding of network information security, network security, choosing safe shopping platforms and shipping units, and when detecting signs of fraud, they should immediately report to the authorities for timely handling," said Mr. Nguyen Hai Trieu.
