Currently, the whole province has over 5,000 hectares of water surface for aquaculture. In recent years, along with exploiting the water surface area for intensive and specialized fish farming, people in the province are promoting the development of specialty aquatic products, with a total farming area estimated at nearly 100 hectares. Among them, some objects are emerging that are favored by the market, such as: Eel, green-legged shrimp, snails... This direction helps to increase production value and income for people.
Research in the province’s aquaculture areas shows that the trend of switching to specialty varieties is increasing in both scale and area. Among them, the model of raising apple snails is developing strongly in many localities in the province.
Typically, in Nhan Thinh commune (Ly Nhan), a specialized snail farming area has been formed with a total area of about 30 hectares. Most of the ponds along the Red River dike and in the residential areas of the commune are chosen by people to raise snails. This specialty aquatic animal has many advantages and advantages compared to other aquatic products. Raising snails only requires buying breeds the first time, then people can produce their own breeds by collecting and hatching eggs. The snails' food is completely natural, from discarded vegetables, tubers, fruits and some other fruits and agricultural products.
Snails are especially suitable for small ponds, inefficient fish farming and few diseases. In terms of economic efficiency, 1 kg of commercial snails is currently being sold by people at an average price of 70 thousand VND/kg. Snail productivity reaches 6 - 7 tons/ha, reaching a value of 450 - 460 million VND/ha, 3 - 5 times higher than traditional fish farming (white carp, silver carp, bighead carp, etc.). The market for commercial snails is very large, traders come to the ponds to buy and send to provinces and cities.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Hung, village 1 - Dong Thuy (Nhan Thinh) shared: I was the first person to bring snails to raise in the commune, starting with about 50 pairs of parent snails more than 15 years ago. Since then, I have bred them to supply to farmers in the area and exported them to many provinces and cities. At the same time, I purchased commercial snails to sell to the market, at one point the snail purchasing area was about 20 hectares. Currently, the market is more favorable and wider, Mr. Hung no longer buys snails for people, but is still maintaining his family's snail farming area of more than 1 hectare.
Along with snails, other specialty aquaculture models are showing quite good results. The area for raising banana fish and snakehead fish in the province is about 8 hectares in an industrial, specialized direction. The farming density is from 5 - 10 fish/m2, with a harvest size of 0.8 - 1.2 kg/fish. The output of banana fish and snakehead fish in the models is about 40 tons/ha, with a production value of 2.5 billion VND/ha, minus costs for a profit of 300 - 350 million VND/ha. Giant freshwater prawn is the subject chosen by some specialized aquaculture households, with a total area of about 10 hectares, with a value of about 300 million VND/ha... Cage fish farming on the Red River is also being applied by many households to raise specialty catfish.
The mud-free eel farming model in cement tanks has also been applied by some households. Mr. Hoang Dai Long, Dong Lac village, Dong Hoa commune (Kim Bang) built 8 mud-free eel farming tanks on an area of 100 m2. In these tanks, Mr. Long imported 20,000 eel fry to raise, producing 3 tons of commercial eel each year. This new farming method does not require pond area, people can take advantage of the barn system, yard space, and garden.
According to Mr. Hoang Dai Long, the most important thing in raising eels without mud is to master the technique. Eel tanks require changing the water twice a day (morning and evening). The output for eel meat products is currently quite abundant, mainly exported and sold to restaurants and eel shops in the province, without needing to find additional markets outside. The selling price of eel meat is stable at 120,000 VND/kg, achieving a profit of about 40%, quite high compared to other types of seafood.
In fact, raising specialty aquatic products is basically not too complicated compared to traditional fish farming. Households can take advantage of and convert from available ponds. The increasing market demand for specialty aquatic products is a great advantage for people's production development... However, people still need to master the techniques of care and disease prevention for some farming objects to ensure high efficiency. This is an issue that requires professional sectors to pay attention to, support and guide people.
Discussing this issue, Mr. Pham Anh Tuan, Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) said: The effectiveness of aquaculture has been proven in models applied in the province. Most importantly, people need to consider and research carefully to choose the appropriate aquaculture species for their family's actual conditions. The department will be responsible for training, transferring farming techniques, and disease prevention for aquaculture when needed by the locality and people, along with general professional tasks...
Specialty aquaculture is a new direction, promising potential for development in the coming time. This method not only contributes to increasing value but also aims to create key aquatic products, contributing to the growth rate of the aquaculture industry in particular and the province's agricultural production in general.
