The developed trade and service network system has created conditions for consumers in the province to have more and more choices for shopping and experiencing services from traditional to modern, contributing significantly to the socio -economic development of the locality.

Expand distribution and retail channels

In 1997, the first true supermarket in Dong Nai in particular and in Vietnam in general came into operation, which was Cora Supermarket (now Big C Dong Nai Trade Center) at the corner of Vung Tau intersection (Bien Hoa city). Since then, the network of supermarkets and trade centers in Dong Nai has been increasingly expanded and developed. Currently, the whole province has 5 trade centers and 12 supermarkets, along with chains of convenience stores and mini supermarkets expanded in districts and cities in the province, including remote areas.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade, the province currently has 314 convenience stores belonging to the following systems: Bach Hoa Xanh, Winmart, Co.opFood, Porkshop, GS25, FamilyMart... in operation. In addition, there are many stores registered by business households and operating in the form of general stores, specialized stores in hardware and electrical appliances such as: Dien May Cho Lon, Dien May Xanh, The Gioi Di Dong..., stores selling milk, mother and baby products. In parallel, the province has 137 traditional markets and more than 10,000 business households providing essential goods for people in the province.

In the first quarter of 2025, the total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue in the province is estimated to reach more than VND 86.1 trillion, up nearly 15.3% over the same period last year. Of which, retail sales of goods alone are estimated to reach about VND 60.5 trillion, up 13.6% over the same period last year. This will be an important stepping stone for the trade and service sector to strive to maintain growth momentum, contributing to the province's double-digit growth target in 2025.

In addition to traditional retail channels, e-commerce has been growing in Dong Nai in recent years. According to the Vietnam E-commerce Index (EBI) Report 2024 published by the Vietnam E-commerce Association (Vecom), Dong Nai's EBI ranked 6th in the country, equivalent to the ranking in 2023. This is also the 8th consecutive year that Dong Nai has maintained its ranking in the top 10 leading localities nationwide in terms of e-commerce index.

Vecom Deputy General Secretary Nguyen Minh Duc expressed that in the context of technology development, especially the increasingly popular multi-channel sales, Dong Nai needs to continue to strengthen training activities on e-commerce, live streaming to sell local specialties and OCOP products (One Commune One Product Program) according to relevant topics and focus on training and supporting local businesses to improve sales efficiency and promotion through e-commerce channels.

Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade Tran Duong Hung shared that improving the efficiency of transactions on e-commerce platforms and understanding legal issues in e-commerce business are key factors determining the rapid and sustainable growth of commerce in Dong Nai. In the coming time, the department will propose solutions to support the development of e-commerce in the area, bringing e-commerce to be widely used and applied in the production and business activities of enterprises, cooperatives, etc. and the daily consumption activities of people in the province.

Maintain and promote double-digit growth

According to the Department of Industry and Trade, total retail sales of goods and service revenue in the province continued to maintain a fairly good growth rate, averaging 11% per year in the 2015-2020 period. In 2021, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, total retail sales of goods and service revenue in the province increased by only 2.4% compared to 2020.

From 2022 to now, trade and service activities have returned to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic. However, due to the impact of the world economic situation, the prices of goods, raw materials, transportation, and input goods have increased, affecting the cost of goods. In that context, the trade and service sector has made efforts to recover and grow in recent years.

In 2022, the province's total retail sales and service revenue reached nearly 234.2 trillion VND, an increase of more than 24% compared to 2021. By 2023, despite the difficulties of the domestic and international economic situation, the total retail sales of goods and service revenue in the province still reached more than 262.6 trillion VND, an increase of nearly 12.2% compared to 2022. In 2024, Dong Nai's total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue increased by 13% compared to 2023. This is the third consecutive year after the Covid-19 pandemic that the province's retail sales of goods and consumer services achieved double-digit growth.

Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Duong Minh Dung requested that in the coming time, the province's industry and trade sector needs to focus on implementing tasks and solutions to promote double-digit growth in the industrial and trade sectors according to appropriate scenarios and targets. In particular, the department needs to work and coordinate with localities to improve the operational efficiency of traditional markets; coordinate with supermarkets and commercial centers in the province to focus on solutions to stimulate consumption, ensure supply and demand, promote non-cash payments, increase export turnover, develop port services, logistics, etc.

Dong Nai is assessed by economic experts as a dynamic economic development locality of the country with many enterprises participating in the process of production, business, import - export, trade development, services... Therefore, the province has been focusing on developing trade and service infrastructure, developing logistics services and logistics service business infrastructure, developing tourism services and diversifying tourism types, developing e-commerce, production - consumption chains of local strengths... At the same time, the province will deploy solutions to promote digital transformation and green growth in the process of developing the trade and service sector in the area.
