On October 31st, Cho Ray Hospital announced that it had successfully performed reconstructive surgery on a patient suffering from severe complications in the jawbone area.
Last September, Mr. LTD (61 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) came to Cho Ray Hospital for examination with all the screws and plates exposed in his left lower jawbone.
Six years ago, the patient underwent surgery to remove a bone tumor in his jaw and have a corrective plate inserted. However, complications worsened, with all the screws and plates protruding, causing pain and discomfort. For many years, Mr. D. has been afraid to look in the mirror and feels very self-conscious when interacting with others.

According to Dr. Tran Van Duong, Head of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at Cho Ray Hospital, the patient had a fairly severe heart condition, with a heart rate fluctuating between 30–50 beats per minute (normal range is 70–90 beats per minute).
If reconstructive surgery is performed, the patient is at risk of cardiac arrest during the operation. The use of anesthetics and muscle relaxants also directly affects the heart's conduction.
After interdisciplinary consultation, the doctors decided to implant a temporary pacemaker for the patient. The surgery lasted nearly 5 hours, removing all exposed screws and plates, and using a 12cm fibula skin flap to reconstruct the jaw bone defect.
Currently, the patient is recovering well, no longer feeling self-conscious or experiencing the pain they had before.
