Information from Phu Tho Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, the unit successfully removed a large colon polyp (30x22mm) from a 13-year-old patient with a history of recurrent intussusception.

Previously, on October 30, 2025, patient NTA (13 years old, residing in Tien Lu commune, Phu Tho province) was hospitalized with intermittent abdominal pain, the pain gradually increased, accompanied by nausea.

The family said that this symptom appeared 1 day ago but did not improve, so they took the child to Phu Tho Province Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital for examination and treatment.

Through examination, ultrasound and abdominal CT scan, doctors discovered an intussusception mass suspected to be caused by a colon polyp. To determine the exact cause, the patient was ordered a colonoscopy, which discovered a large, twisted, long-stalked polyp.

After consultation, the doctors decided to remove the polyps endoscopically using the snare polypectomy technique to treat thoroughly and prevent recurrence. The entire process went smoothly, without complications, the polyps were completely removed and sent for pathological anatomy.

According to Dr. Be Thi Minh Quynh, Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Functional Testing, Phu Tho Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, this is one of the highly technical endoscopic cases performed by the team of doctors at Phu Tho Provincial Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, with professional support from endoscopists of Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital.

The success of the procedure is a testament to the effective coordination between specialized units; at the same time, it affirms the professional capacity and spirit of continuous learning of the team of doctors in the field of pediatric gastrointestinal interventional endoscopy.

After the intervention, the child was transferred to the Department of Pediatric Surgery for further treatment and monitoring of bleeding. Here, the child was treated with prophylactic antibiotics, combined with digestive enzyme supplements and a soft diet to help the intestines recover.

After 6 days of monitoring and treatment, the patient's condition was stable, no more abdominal pain, normal bowel movements, was discharged from the hospital and scheduled for a periodic follow-up visit to re-check the condition of the colon.

Dr. Be Thi Minh Quynh added that most colon polyps in children are benign and usually do not pose an immediate danger. However, if not detected and treated promptly, polyps can grow larger, causing problems such as digestive disorders, gastrointestinal bleeding or even leading to intussusception and the risk of turning into cancer, especially large polyps (10-15 mm or more).

Doctors recommend that parents should pay attention to their children's digestive health. If they see signs such as prolonged abdominal pain, bloody stools, digestive disorders or unexplained weight loss, the family should take the child to a medical facility with a gastroenterology department for examination and early screening for intestinal diseases.

Timely detection and treatment of lesions such as colon polyps will help prevent complications, protect the digestive health and comprehensive development of children./.
