A new study was conducted by experts at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan (China). The research team analyzed data collected from approximately 5,000 people with colorectal cancer, according to the health website Medical News Today (UK).
Abdominal pain is one of the common symptoms of colorectal cancer.
The results showed that younger patients with colorectal cancer have a higher risk of rectal bleeding and changes in bowel habits. Specifically, the study found that before diagnosis, about 60% of people with colorectal cancer under 50 years old experienced rectal bleeding. Meanwhile, this rate was only about 30% in people over 50 years old.
Another warning sign of the disease is that nearly 60% of teenagers with colorectal cancer experience changes in bowel habits. This rate is only 48% in older patients.
Furthermore, younger patients are more likely to be diagnosed at later stages. This is because young people tend to ignore warning signs of the disease. Rectal bleeding and abdominal pain are also more common in this group.
Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the colon of the large intestine or rectum, the section of the bowel connecting the colon and the anus. Cancerous tumors develop from polyps or lumps in the inner lining of the colon and rectum. Screening tests can detect polyps in their precancerous stage, allowing for timely intervention. If left undetected or untreated, the cancer can metastasize to other parts of the body.
Common symptoms of colorectal cancer include blood in the stool, changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bloating, unexplained weight loss, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, shortness of breath, and other symptoms.
To prevent the risk of colorectal cancer, people need to eat a lot of plant-based foods, exercise regularly, avoid alcohol, not smoke, and have regular health checkups, according to Medical News Today .
