Recently, information has been spreading on Philippine social media platforms that the country's Department of Education (DepEd) will stop implementing the K-12 system from next June.
According to a fact-check report by AFP on May 18, a post on Facebook in the Philippines on May 11 said that 5-year-old children can skip kindergarten and go straight to grade 1, and grade 10 students can enter university without having to study grades 11 and 12.
This information is accompanied by the logos of various local government agencies, giving the impression that this is an official and highly authentic announcement.
However, on May 14, the Philippine Ministry of Education denied this information, asserting that this was fake news and warning people to be vigilant against false information.
AFP's verification report said the websites of the Philippine Senate and House of Representatives also did not record any bills passed to abolish the K-12 program.
The K-12 program, implemented in the Philippines since 2013, is a major reform in the Philippine education system.
The program increases the length of compulsory education from 10 to 12 years, including kindergarten and two years of advanced high school, with the aim of improving the quality of education and ensuring the Philippines' integration into the global education system.
According to AFP, this false information originated from a Facebook page impersonating the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and quickly attracted more than 5,300 shares, causing confusion among local parents and students.
AFP said that although the K-12 system has been implemented in the Philippines for more than a decade, the program has encountered controversy as many parents and students say the high cost of education and long study hours have created a financial burden.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos has said he is considering several reforms to improve the effectiveness of the K-12 education program.
However, this system remains in place to this day, despite much debate in society about its effectiveness and suitability.
Under current regulations, 5-year-old children in the Philippines are required to complete kindergarten before entering Grade 1. Similarly, students who complete Grade 10 will not be exempted from two years of high school.
